Prince George, B.C.- In the Prince George region, there is a pretty good chance some drivers will be suffering from a case of triskadeckaphobia, the fear of the number 13. There will be 13 traffic units of the RCMP patrolling the highways around Prince George this weekend, and that spells bad luck for aggressive drivers.
Officers will be on the look out for improper lane changing, following too closely, Impaired Drivers, Passing on the right, Driving without reasonable consideration for others, intersection offences and any other driving behaviour which jeopardizes the safety of others.
Throughout North District, there will be, at times, more than 50 traffic enforcement units patrolling the highways. “If you are travelling the highways this weekend, you will see a police car” says Sgt Pat McTiernan of the Prince George Integrated Provincial Traffic Services. Make sure you buckle up as officers will also be watching to make sure you are wearing your seat belt. “Crashes occur in seconds and it is important for everyone to stay in the survivable life space of their vehicle” says Sgt McTiernan.

Better get out my checkbook! :-)>
Catch me if you can!
no worries, they are like flowers in that they only come out when the sun is shining.

When it starts raining as it usually does on the May long weekend, we will see the commitment to enforcing traffic infractions.
lol!
Good job all of the real criminals are going on holiday this weekend, so that the police can focus on fundraising. Awfully nice of them.
I guess we have to pay for their new ivory tower somehow.
Well let me say something this about that.

Pick up the idiots that like to drive 10 to 20k under the speed limit and hold up traffic for miles. Those are the ones that cause accidents. They don't have the brains to pull off the road and let the stream of traffic go by but would rather watch the impatience grow behind them with the drivers that want to pass.

Arrow Transport! I would like to know how they figure it's safe to drive 10k under the speed limit when they collect vehicles behind them, try to pass one of them between Dunkley and Quesnel, Good Luck. If they cared so much about safety they would do the speed limit instead of impeding traffic. Speed restricted! Build you own damn road and do what you like.

I'm so scared sh**tless from the cops "YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED" and "WE"RE OUT TO GET YOU" that I'm not moving out my driveway. Christ I might fart and they'd get me for that.

Back off and let people enjoy their weekend instead of trying to drive fear in to everyone. Sounds like a police state to me. "Stay home or we'll get you for something don't matter what but we'll get you"

Pick anoter cash cow for the weekend go grab some crooks! Sorry they can't pay.

Sorry, I forgot about the boneheads that drive 80-90 on the highway and speed up to 120 on a passing lane, you can't pass them, then they slow back down to 80-90 and the cops are after agressive drivers? They are aggresive because they are trying to get past the bonehead. And thats where the cops get you and say you are driving aggessively. Give us a break and look at the big picture instead of grabbing money!

If the weather permits drive at the posted speed limit, which is usually quite a bit too low for the modern vehicles we are driving nowadays.

Too bad!

Write a letter to your MLA and suggest that the speed limits be raised. But don't tailgate and give the finger to the person who prefers to obey the law and doesn't speed. Trying to coerce others into breaking the law is illegal.

Respect those who drive a steady pace at the posted limit and wait for a safe opportunity to pass if you are that much in a hurry!

And if you are that much in a hurry you should have started your trip half an hour or an hour earlier.

Now relax and enjoy the drive. I know I am not going to get a ticket.

Don't you remember the huge debate we had over Ben's editorial calling the kettle black - Van Dongen's speeding tickets and what hypocrites some of us were to judge him?
We are entering into a long weekend with a higher volume of traffic. For public safety sake we need a strong police presence this weekend.
Slow down, buckle up,and don't drink and drive, run a stop sign or tail gate, etc. Use your common sense. And if you follow these precautionary measures, your chequebook won't be required.
I wish everyone a safe and awesome long weekend!
I follow 100 metres off the bumper of the fastest car on the road.

Drive 100 till passed. Follow that car until passed. Follow new fastest car. Repeat.

Works 99% of time.
In responce to acrider54 the speed limit posted is maximum 100km per hour, there is no minimum speed for the highway. Obviously you have never driven or been in a semi tractor trailer unit, they do stop on a dime and if you are in that big of a hurry maybe you should leave a little bit earlier and expect some delays, or build YOUR own road and do what you like.
Its definitely a cash cow isn't it? I bought my first car in 1959. It was a 54 meteor 4 door standard and would do about 110 MPH. It had poorer brakes than todays cars. Poorer handling, poorer steering, no seat belts, no air bags. The speed limit was higher than it is today and the roads are 200 times better. I drove the Banff Jasper hiway when it was a cow trail and the speed limit was 65 MPH. The same road today can be driven quite easily at 140 KMH except for the nastier corners. Its not about safety, its about money. I agree with every post here. I have to say that 90 KMH in Banff and Jasper parks is verging on extortion. The trans-Canada hiway and a beautiful 4 lane? Double the fines in the park and double the fines in construction areas and that pretty well covers a lot of park Highway. I expect a ticket there would be near $600. Happy Motoring!!
There is a minimum in Alberta for the Highway and they do ticket for it.
Vulcan, I do have a class one license and yes of course I have driven semis, I find it no problem going the speed limit and safely come to a stop when needed you just have to have your wits about you.
It is not simply a money grab. The amount of traffic yesterday was greatly increased from any other day this year. With many more people on the roads, there is definitely a need for a greater police presence out there.

It can only be a money grab if there are people speeding, drinking/driving, and doing things that can get them ticketed.

Drivers need have more patience and realize there is more traffic this weekend, and it is going to take longer to get where they are going.

At the same time, I certainly agree with some of the comments above that those who would like to go 80km/h should move out of the way when they get the chance. There are plenty of rest stops, and turning lanes they could use to let the traffic by.

Follow the rules of the road like the majority of people, and you will have nothing to worry about...
I was nailed yesterday between Chiliwack and Hope. One minute your going 110 km an hour, the next your crawling along at 40 km an hour. When I saw a chance to get by the group of four vehicles in front of me I took it. And sure enough there is a speed trap. I was caught breaking the law, whoops, it won't happen again (tongue in cheek).
What I want to say though is this. You drivers out there, and it isn't many of you, that need to speed up when being passed need to have your licences revoked and your heads examined. You are the idiots that cause too much avoidable frustration on the road.
My cruise control is set at 109. If I catch up with you that is because I'm going faster than you are. I'm not there to remind you that you need to speed up. Let me by!!! And if you want to follow my blazingly fast 109 then go ahead, just stay back a respectful distance.
On a side note on my way down south on Thursday all the emergency personnal and their vehicles were set up in the middle of the road in 100 Mile House, wishing everyone a safe long w/e and handing out safe driving pamphlets. Initially I was frusterated that they slowed me down, but in retrospect I think it was an excellent way to raise awareness.
Good Work 100 Mile House emergency units.
And yes, there was a ton of cops on the roads yesterday, I saw at least 6 other vehicles pulled over.
Pretty sure it is only a cash grab if you are speeding enough to warrant a ticket. Not sure why that is so difficult for people to understand . . . LOL.
Cash grab fer the fuzz. Donut sales suffer. Evens out though.
My wife got a $167.00 seat belt ticket on Saturday. It must be a gash grab because she was the passenger and I was driving, my son was in the back and we ALL had our seat belts ON. He stopped us and went to my wife's window and told her she was being fined because she didn't have her belt on. He said he saw her putting it on. What she was doing as we were waiting at the intersection was pulling on it to seat it better across her body. The officer was coming from the other direction in his car and had to look up into my window, past me and see what could only have been a sillouete of my wife as he was a least 15 feet away. When my wife told him what she was doing he just said she was lying and see you in court. She told him that she has never ever driven without her seat belt and he said "I highly doubt that" Totally rude. I asked him if he could be any friendlier and he just asked me to produce my license to proof who I was. Wow.. way to treat law abiding citizens. Well.. I guess we'll see him in court and waste some more tax payer money. Also my son who witnessed this asked " are all cops like that" I said no but I am sure that it left an impression on the him as he said it's kind of hard to trust a cop if they act like that. I obviously cant name him but I have already been told by others who know him that he has a huge attitude and some colleages won't deal with him. Lucky me. See you in court pal..
Vulcan said: "In responce to acrider54 the speed limit posted is maximum 100km per hour, there is no minimum speed for the highway"

Actually there is a minimum speed in BC.

From Section 145 Slow driving of the MVA
A person must not drive a motor vehicle at so slow a speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law.

Also Section 144 Careless Driving Prohibited
"A person must not drive a motor vehicle on a highway (b) without reasonable consideration for other persons using the highway,"

That means that if you are driving at 70km/hr in a 100km/hr zone on a two lane winding highway and consistently have a long line up behind you with people trying to pass at the next relatively straight stretch you are not "driving with reasonable consideration for other persons using the highway." If you cannot drive faster you should be looking more often in the rear view mirror and pulling over as frequently as is reasonable to let others pass by.

Section 145 slow driving, actually goes on to say:
"If the driver of a motor vehicle is driving at so slow a speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, a peace officer may require the driver to increase his or her speed, or to remove the motor vehicle from the roadway to the nearest suitable place and to refrain from causing or allowing the motor vehicle to move from that place until directed to do so by a peace officer."
"A person must not drive a motor vehicle at so slow a speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic"

And would it be safe to assume that the "normal and reasonable" movement of traffic would be at a speed which does not exceed the posted maximum speed limit?

Just thought I'd throw that out there :)
