Telus has announced it has joined the growing list of suppliers providing Voice Over IP (VoIP) services in Canada . Current Canadian suppliers include organizations such as Bell Canada , Shaw Cable Systems, and upstart Vonage Holdings.

In general, VoIP or IP Telephony, is the process of sending voice information in digital form rather than through traditional networks. It’s a computer-assisted way of making phone calls. This technology allows you to use your existing Internet connection to place telephone calls. The strength is in the fact that you never need to be in any one location. The portable VoIP phone, can be connected to any internet connection, whether at the office, at home, or in another city.

Currently service in Northern BC is available, but only for telephone numbers in cities such as Vancouver or Calgary . Local Prince George and area telephone numbers are expected later this year.

Unlike Shaw Cable, Telus does not plan to offer the service nation-wide.

I'm invested in a US based company (Primal Solutions) providing VoIP billing services to Time Warner and 'possibly' Comcast cable companies in the US. They account for 3/4 of the US market and expect to have 2,000,000 customers signed on by the end of this year.

My hope is that Primal Solutions can make $0.007 from each phone call placed over VoIP for most of the big VoIP datacom facilitators.
