Prince George, B.C.- The shutdowns and curtailments in the B.C. lumber industry continue. This time, news that Tolko workers at the stud  mills in  Kelowna and Armstrong  will be of the job as of Monday June 8th
The shut down will impact  more than 355 employees and  is supposed to last at  least a week, but there is no telling how long it will go on as management says the closure will be reviewed on a week to week basis.
In addition to the low demand for product because of the slump in the U.S. housing market, the rising Canadian dollar is also having a negative impact on the woods industry.

dollar not doller, sorry need a another cup of coffee!
This is the calm before the storm IMO. The recession really begins this fall when tax loss selling takes place on the stock market and the banks have to realize the much larger commercial realestate bubble. Commercial loans due for renewal looks like a massive wave scheduled to hit in October... will they get the credit required to renew... is that when inflation starts... will the banks survive... doubtful... printing more money won't be the answer next round because they've maxed out that option already. Britain and California claim bankruptcy next week, so printing more debt dollars doesn't seem like a likely solution for round two. The subprime was a pimple to the real deal this fall IMHO.
I agree Eagleone. This is not over by a long shot like some would like us to believe. Our banker told us just yesterday that 75% of loan applications are being denied and one of the big reason was not bad credit or large enough income but surprisingly the banks are saying no to most because they are not showing saving habits. Global news a few months ago did a piece that showed that 80% of canadians do not/can not save anymore. I believe that there will be more job losses, bankruptcies and an increase of people on welfare and uic. Wonder how long the rest of us will be able to fund everyone else on these programs along with the fat government workers that we pay? Another concern is the debt load the federal, provincial and municiple governments are growing. Scary.
