Prince George, B.C.-  While there is an air quality advisory in effect, the city of Prince George will be offering free transit.

Free transit will be available from midnight tonight,  until 11:59 p.m. of the day the advisory ends.

Beginning June 11 all transit buses will switch their digital signs to display stating “Free Fare for Clean Air” and will cover the fare boxes so passengers will not be able to deposit money.

This is the third air advisory day in Prince George since the City of Prince George has offered Free Fare for Clean Air.

What a brilliant idea.

If you want to cut down on the pollution in this town, we should stop these bloody busses from running around town day and night burning diesel without a bloody passenger in them. Its absolutely ludicrous.

Its time to find another way to move the few people who actually use a bus. Perhaps pay the taxi companies to run passengers during off hours.
I like that idea Palopu. It is not often I agree with you, but I do on this one. Our business is down about 50% or more, we could use the added business from the people that aren't on the bus!

Are you serious?? The bus issue is exactly that, a bus issue. Not enough buses, every body whines.Too many buses, not enough riders. Not enough riders, the Transit system whines, and the ride goes around and around.

It is no different than the Taxi business, people don't want to wait for a cab at bar closing time. So, we flood the bar closing time with cabs. Does anyone understand, that we cabby's have to make a living all week, not just for two hours, for your drunken stupidity. Give me a damn break.

I beleive that the busses should run in the morning (rush) afternoon (rush) and the rest of the day the routes should be strategically covered by the taxi services in Prince George. People would still have to get their ride at a bus stop but they would be taken downtown etc; by taxi and returned by taxi. They would be required to pay the same fare as if they were riding a bus, and the balance of the fare would be covered by BC Transit.

This would eliminate the need for all these busses to be running day and night on a regular schedule empty, and provide additional business for the taxi companies.

The savings in labour, maintenance, fuel, cost of new busses, etc; would offset the cost of the taxi's, and at the end of the day there would be a net savings for BC Transit.

Not likely to happen, but thats my opinion.
