Prince George, B.C.- The City of Prince George Council will be getting a detailed report this evening on the wildfire fuel management program that has been underway for five years. The Mayor will be taking an hour long chopper flight over the area this morning to get a good visual of what has been done, and what needs to be done to reduce fire fuels from the City.
The report indicates that while the last 4 years of the mountain pine beetle removal work has reduced the fire hazard in many sites within the City, there remain areas of high and very high wildfire hazard from an ember shower; particularly in the western (Cranbrook Hill) and north western (Nechako Ridge) areas of the City. The report says the two areas “constitute significant wildfire hazards because of the amounts of dead pine, potentially extreme fire behaviour, access challenges for fighting wildfires, and the proximity to residential development and UNBC.”
Council will also be asked to boost the rates you pay for water, sewer and garbage services. The request calls for a 15% hike in water rates, another 5% for sewer, and increasing the cost for 6 months of garbage collection to $59.00 for a small container, $76.00 for a medium and $93.00 for large. Further increases for garbage collection would be added in January.
The owners of the burned out 255 Quebec Street building will be before Council for a reconsideration hearing. They requested the hearing following Council’s decision to demand the building be demolished, the debris, removed and the site filled within 60 days.
