Prince George, B.C.- Expect to pay more for garbage pick up, sewer and water services as of July 1st.
The garbage rates are climbing because the account is supposed to be “self sustaining”, but the Regional District has increased the tipping fees at the Foothills landfill site.
So as of July 1st, the 6 month cost will be:
Small container: $59.00 (up from $55.)
Medium container: $76.00 (up from $69.36)
Large container: $93.00 (up from $84.00)
As for your water and sewer bills, the City says it is costing more to pay off the money borrowed for a couple of major projects. The two utilities are supposed to pay for themselves as well as have a surplus fund. Both funds have had operational deficits for the past year.
The current annual water fee for a single family dwelling is $223.20. A 15% increase to the residential single family dwelling rate is equivalent to $16.74 for the July to December billing period in 2009 and an annual increase of $33.48 in 2010.
As for sewer rates, the current annual fee for a single family dwelling is $200.16. A 5% increase to the residential SFD rate is equivalent to $5.00 for the July to December billing period and an annual increase of $10.01.
The Mayor says he knows there is a ways to go to bring the funds to the point where they are self sufficient. While it is possible there could be a further increase in 2010, Mayor Rogers says that analysis has not been complete.
Councillor Dave Wilbur says he and other Councillors have been getting phone calls from people who are already having trouble with the tax rate, and with this added on top "They are asking what are we doing and when will it end?"
There is no immediate answer to that question as the analysis on what will be beeded to catch up, and set aside for future projects won't be complete until this fall, at which time, further increases will be detailed.
Councillor Brian Skakun says what he wanted to see in the report was what the City is doing to reduce the costs "To some it will be nothing, but to others who have lost their jobs, this is too much. I can't support this, I want to see what we are doing to reduce our costs."
"Thisis cost recovery" says Mayor Rogers, who says in addition to makingplans for delivery of the services, there should be some allocation in the future for education to have people reduce consumption of water.
Councillor's Wilbur and Skakun opposed the increases.

I agree with Skakun and Wilbur. We need to be looking at reducing our costs. Lets get rid of some of the high priced help. Lets do some serious downsizing. Lets fire a few incompetant Managers. There is lots of room for savings at City Hall.
We recently took down the sign at Highway 16 and 97 that showed our population as 81000. I thought that they would put it up with the correct number 76,500, but guess what??? They just painted the old sign and put it back up showing 81000.
The Welcome to Prince George sign on Highway 97 South just before the turn off to the Airport cost us huge dollars. Somewhere in the area of 3 to 4 hundred thousand bucks. It is now surrounded by the expansion of the Highway. Not sure if it will survive or not. If not then kiss another bundle goodbye.
I could go on forever but I wont.
Have a nice day.
