Garbage, Sewer, Water Rates Going Up

Prince George, B.C.- Expect to pay more  for garbage pick up, sewer and water services as of July 1st.

The garbage rates are climbing because the account is supposed to be  “self sustaining”, but the Regional District has increased the tipping fees at the Foothills landfill site.

So as of July 1st, the 6 month cost will be:
Small container:    $59.00 (up from $55.)
Medium container: $76.00  (up from $69.36)
Large container:    $93.00  (up from $84.00)

As for your water and sewer bills, the City says it is costing more to pay off the money borrowed for a couple of major projects.  The two utilities are supposed to pay for themselves as well as have a surplus fund. Both funds have had operational deficits for the past year.

The current annual water fee for a single family dwelling is $223.20. A 15% increase to the residential single family dwelling rate is equivalent to $16.74 for the July to December billing period in 2009 and an annual increase of $33.48 in 2010.

As for sewer rates, the current annual fee for a single family dwelling is $200.16. A 5% increase to the residential SFD rate is equivalent to $5.00 for the July to December billing period and an annual increase of $10.01.

The Mayor says  he knows there is a ways to go to  bring the  funds to the point where they are self sufficient.  While it is possible there could be a further  increase in 2010,  Mayor Rogers  says that  analysis has not been complete.

Councillor Dave Wilbur says he and other Councillors have been getting phone calls from people who are already having trouble with  the  tax rate, and with this added on top "They are asking what are we doing and when will it end?"
There is no immediate answer to that question as the analysis on what will be beeded to catch up, and set aside for future projects won't be complete until  this fall, at which time,  further increases will be detailed.

Councillor Brian Skakun says what he wanted to see in the report was what the  City  is doing to reduce the costs  "To some it will be nothing, but to others who have lost their jobs, this is too much.  I can't  support this, I want to see what we are  doing to reduce our costs."

"Thisis cost recovery" says Mayor Rogers, who says  in addition to makingplans for delivery of the services, there should be  some allocation in the future for education to  have people reduce consumption of water.

Councillor's Wilbur and Skakun opposed the increases.

No surprises here. These dudes havent a clue as to what they are doing., The water and sewage and garbage system are to be self supporting. Why??????? Because the City at some point said that they should be, and have taxed us accordingly. This is just another slimy way to get more dollars out of us.

I agree with Skakun and Wilbur. We need to be looking at reducing our costs. Lets get rid of some of the high priced help. Lets do some serious downsizing. Lets fire a few incompetant Managers. There is lots of room for savings at City Hall.

We recently took down the sign at Highway 16 and 97 that showed our population as 81000. I thought that they would put it up with the correct number 76,500, but guess what??? They just painted the old sign and put it back up showing 81000.

The Welcome to Prince George sign on Highway 97 South just before the turn off to the Airport cost us huge dollars. Somewhere in the area of 3 to 4 hundred thousand bucks. It is now surrounded by the expansion of the Highway. Not sure if it will survive or not. If not then kiss another bundle goodbye.

I could go on forever but I wont.

Have a nice day.
"there should be some allocation in the future for education to have people reduce consumption of water".

And they would tell us if we did lol!
Is this the same increase that we just got a while back? or is this a completely new one? WTF? There is so much corruption in this city it's a joke. Who keeps voting for these clowns. And good job on getting the recycling program in place Dan. Knob.
wages are decreasing - that is if you even have a job, expenses keep going up. I may have no choice by to sell my house when I retire and move outside city limits. Costs have risen to much for a senior to keep up with.
The city needs to reduce its costs or their will be nobody left to pay if we keep going down this road. The tax dollar waste is horrendous and then they want me to be educated on how to preserve my 15psi water service. If the rates are going up, then so should my water pressure. I can't even get enough pressure to turn the sprayer on in my kitchen sink if the dish washer is on... watering the lawn is almost out of the question as it is.... Thats a lot of money for very little IMO.
You are absolutely correct Winnie.... costs are way out of line, especially for seniors.

Move away from the City while you are still able to afford to do so. There are many other smaller places that are much more hospitable and friendly to seniors. Vanderhoof, for one.

Over the past fifteen years the City has made no effort to trim costs or make the tax dollars more effective... there has been too much slobbering at the trough by those who should have been more concerned with value for money... and guess what... those people are still working there !!

The administrative waste is outrageous... and sooooo well protected.... ARRRGHHHHH.

Good work again Dan...guess your just looking for one term.
"Over the past fifteen years the City has made no effort to trim costs or make the tax dollars more effective..."

The City has a *captive audience - the homeowners* and it knows it. All one can do is grin and bear it and try to pay the ever rising bills when they come due! They try to pacify our anger with statistics and cost comparisons with other cities. Big deal! This is a tactic known as leapfrogging numbers psychology! At the end of the day we still pay more, every time!

How about making this city the lowest cost best run city of its size in the province and advertise it as such?

No, the more bloated the better!

The new mayor and councillors ran for election with the message of leaner and more responsible management.

Nothing has changed.

Ever since Dan came into office all he has done is raise taxes and rates. People are losing jobs all over and all he does is demand more. We have friends who work for the city and the amount of wasted dollars is incredible and that is only in the department they work for. Is there no way of making them accountable for the way they waste our money? What is the city managers role in all of this, does he not keep an eye on all the wasted spending? They are going to successfully drive the population of PG down very quickly which means the rest who cannot move for what ever reasons will once again incur higher taxes and rates. Thanks Dan!
This is crazy, i hear more and more everyday that people are moving to the south. Kamploops, here i come. I hear there taxes are lower and the golf season is longer...
If my can is empty i set it out, never close the lid so it fills with water,I no longer can afford to recycle so EVERYTHING goes in.If they(citygods)want to keep Stealing our hard earned money they will have to put up with 300 pound cans. Its actually very entertaining to watch that super truck try lifting a can full of water or dump an empty can.
Well that's a hoot !!!! (Where is owl when he should be in on this one ?)

Steven has given you the perfect way to protest and demonstrate your feelings about fee increases.... allow your fabulous, cost saving, cost reduction, garbage containers to fill with water for pickup day.... maybe the message will become apparent to your "citygods".

It is also said by some ... that if enough people were to flush their toilets simultaneously... say at 7:13 PM on a Sunday evening for instance ... the "citygods" might notice the effect this would have at the STP... harmless, but effective and impressive.

Oh Yeah, great idea - put extra strain on the machinery so it will break down and the city will have to buy new equipment sooner. Yeah, that will really teach the city a lesson about cost cutting and keep garbage collection costs down.

Try behaving like an adult instead of a destructive child.
OK. I want to know who is getting paid, and how much, to put that poison in my water. Talking about flouride. Why is the city council not getting rid of this expenditure? There has been enough proof to write a set of encyclopedias on the toxic qualitys of this chemical. I think I will have to bring this up on fridays radio show. I'm really choked about this and am seriously thinking of taking it to city council again.
Did you not know supertech that the reason governments starting using this in the first place is that one of the side effects of Flouride in humans is CALMING. It keeps us all mild mannered and passive. I have a well therefore I have the gaul to speak up. Roflmao
Ospika is being paved again. It was done last year. Have we paid for that yet? My CD player in my car takes a beating on our roads. If it don't bother hizzoner Dan yet, I guess the roads are good enough for me. You drive on our roads, doncha Dan? City Hall parking lot ain't nuthin to write home about either. Mirrors our road conditions. Gritty mill town with bad air and big taxes. What say, Dan?
Supertech, even experts who previously defended the addition of fluoride to the drinking water have come around in droves now urging that the accumulative long term side effects are scary. The stuff stays in the body of the *consumer* as it is not excreted.

Over time it does a number on our health. Even the claims that it is good for the teeth is based on fiction. The dental profession is slowly coing around too.

Kitimat was the latest city in B.C. that eliminated the addition of fluoride from its drinking water after the people there were actually given a choice in a referendum!

Can you believe it? They actually were given an opportunity to have a democratic vote!

Here in P.G. several campaigns have been mounted in the past to collecting signatures, asking for a referendum...etc. City Hall will not pay attention.

Kinsley was/is a firm believer in fluoride. That's why half a million dollars was borrowed to install a brand new fluoride injection system some years ago.

I bet it hasn't been paid off yet.
