So the crying out from o250 crew about the Olympics was not loud enough?

OK, first questions, what is the direct economic benefits?

What are the indirect benefits to the community after the smoke clears.

What facilities need to be built and at what cost.

Will my taxes increase? If so, then no way!

Do we have adequate infrastructure?
The $5,000 or so dollars it took to just attend this information session in Vancouver is beyond our budget. Just fix the darn roads ! Be known as a mayor that actually did the base work to make PG a place that we want to live and attract tourists too. Not a place that the tourists remember as oh yeah, that place that did in the suspension and fined me for parking at Walmart overnight.
The Intent to bid letter must be sent to the Games Committee by August 7th accompanied by a non-refundable cheque for $5000.00 (1/3 of the bid process)

Roders and his cronies can blow whatever smoke they like, but they have to be fully aware of the rules and regulations regarding the bidding process.

August 7th gives them roughly 50 days to get things to-gether.

I suspect that they have been working behind the scenes and probably have already done some groundwork. Running this through City Council for approval will just be a formality. Shades of Colin Kinsley.

The games will require between 4000 and 6000 volunteers.

WE CAN'T AFFORD IT!!!
Mayor Rockefeller
I'd need to see more details before determining whether I'd support it. There is no doubt that it would provide a large injection of money into the City, not to mention national exposure, but I'd like to see some tangible estimates of what it would cost us to host it. Only then could we determine if the benefits would outweigh the costs.

And no I'm not going to scream that we should fix the roads before we do ANYTHING else in the freaking town. It's getting about as bad as hearing people complain about high gas prices. There is more to life than roads and the price of fuel.
Yes, but roads a fuel come nearer the top of the list than hosting winter games.

No not Mayor Rogers or council.

I am thinking of those who still believe that the beetle kill has devastated our City and that the sky is falling.

We voted Dano in for one reason and he is just doing that.
Look at the Halifax 2011 Winter Games site and find all the goodies that the feds, province, regional and local governments are putting in.

$40 million for this facility

The cities accross Canada are screaming at receiving such gifts because they have to continue to operate them. Operating a facility in Halifax, a capital and a City with a much larger market area than PG will have for many decades if not a century, is one thing. Operating it in PG is a much more expensive proposition due to the smaller population base.

As several others have said, we need to see the cost benefit analysis. Is it a NEED to have or a WANT to have?

If we want to outdo Kamloops, it is a need, but a rather fickle need. If it means an increase in people and businesses wanting to call PG home, it starts to become a more reasonable need.
How about $15 million for two ski hills ....

http://www.canadagames2011.ca/en/home/news/pressreleases/venuesannouncedforgames.aspx

I assume Tabor and Purden would benefit tremendously. If they benefit tremendously, then I think the community will benefit tremendously, not only the ones who ski, snowboard, and sit around in the spring sun catching skin cancer.
February 2011, an annoucement is made that PG will host the 2015 Canada Winter games. it is expected that up to $70 million will be spent on infrastructure improvement with about $50 million coming from the Feds and Province $10 million from the City and regional district, and another $5million from sponsors.

The facility operations will be taken care of by some private groups such as the ski-hill operators. Some of the other facilities will need an annula operating subsidy from the City and Regional District of some $700thousand.

So what benefits does the $700,000 per year buy that we can afford?
Thanks but no thanks. We no can afford!
FIX THE DAMN ROADS, Hello is anybody home??? This council is no different than the ones of the past. They look after their friends, but not the people that sign their paychecks.

Let's do it Danny Boy, lets spend BIG, $54 million for the PAC, $46 million for the RCMP lock up, waste money on bingo halls. Come on Dan, lets get right stupid with our money. You sir have not a clue, and nor do any of your fellow councilors. The public is screaming at you about the roads, and you want to host the Canada Winter Games in 2015. Just to waste tax payers money to look into such an event shows me that should be shown the damn door. What an embarrassment this city will be to the rest of Canada, if we hold such an event.

Take the blinders off Danny boy, Fix our damn ROADS!! That will be a start. This is one dirty town, clean it up already! All the money you and your thugs are wasting on all these Grandiose dreams, could fix all of our roads in a few years. Every man women and child uses our roads. Only a select few will use the PAC, and only a select few will use the new RCMP building. Even some Cops are saying that the new RCMP building is way too much.

HELLO, is anybody home.

What a farce our city is
Hey taxinapothole...although I agree with all you said, why would you care any more. Thought you were moving to Kamloops?
another waste of tax dollars, just like the Olympics
Go for it, for a stinking $5 grand. So what if at the end of the day, it costs us $5 million dollars. Because it means that the Feds will be putting in over $25 million dollars, and probably soak the province for another $10 million. Imagine $40,000,000.00 dollars with activity. It will likely me at least 200 good paying construction jobs for two years. Than for what ever days the event is on, The 5000 attendees, will likely be paying an average of $50/day on knick Knacks or snacks, etc, thats a 1/4 million dollars of economic activities. Don't forget the equal amount from the volunteers spending money. likely in the half a million additional dollars worth of money moving
around because of the winter games. Likely will add up to a lot of dollars.

Go for it Dan, just make sure you put in a damn good proposal. Not one of the self crap.
Here we go. We get taxed like Vancouver so why not host something that will cost the tax payers for years just like Vancouver. We always hear befor hand how much money it will bring to the place but in the end they all OWE. I am so sick of seeing posts every week about how much our city is either increasing the taxes or bullchit things they want to borrow and spend money on. Is it ever going to end. This city is losing population growth for a reason. The financial situation all over the world is still risky at best and our city spends spends spends. 20 years ago Kamloops and PG were approximately the same size. Kamloops has ballooned to over 200,000 and PG has lost approximately 13 thousand people. Duhhhhh There is a problem. Many seniors are struggling due to all the tax increases this city and regional district has crambed down their throats and many more have lost their jobs with no jobs to replace them. Duhhhhhh A dirty, stinky small city who thinks they are Vancouver!
sorry the population of Kamloops is 84,000
I wouldn't panic boys!
By the time the Campbellympics get done with us,the winter games will have become a dirty word!
Don't worry about the roads, I hear Mayor Dan wants to have them all bronzed.

This is the same Mayor who lost the previous election by stating that the Cameron Street bridge was not a priority.

I guess he wants to have all kinds of fancy venues that you can't get to because of the derelict condition of our infrastructure.

Mayor Dan's new motto...You can't get there from anywhere.

I was hoping he had improved his thinking skills since then.....guess not.
Hate to ruin everyone's fun, but I keep going thru detours on account of all the "fixin' the roads" that ain't happening. Why not whine about gas prices too?

This place is a hick town because it's full of hicks.
says the local?
A hick is an attitude, not a location.

BTW Loki - for someone who named themself after a mischeivous Norse god, you sure do sweat the little stuff. ;-)
trying to restrain my real thoughts.
Otherwise I might get slammed or banned.
Eats: please keep up the sane comments - it's tiresome reading the armchair critics who so sure they know what they are talking about. (I also appreciate the book your name is referring to!)
Book? What book? It's the punchline to a joke about a koala bear!
The New Cameron St, Bridge is a joke.

The City is scrambling to come up with the money to pay for it.

It is way over budget.

The Roundabout at the North end is coming out of the road budget, which is one reason you are not getting very much paving this year. They didnt have the balls to put the cost of the Roundabout in the Bridge budget because it would be too embarrasing.

This Roundabout has the potential of making us the laughing stock of British Columbia. They have already tore out and redone a part of it because it was too small. In my opinion it is still to small, and will cause huge problems for traffic, especially during the winter months.

Seems we spend huge dollars on projects in this City, and never get the desired results.

We built a new Cameron St., bridge to handle the projected increase in traffic from 8000 vehicles per day to 14000 vehicles per day, and to avoid any more repairs to the old bridge, and to expedite traffic. Then we put in a Roundabout that will actually slow traffic down.

There will be NO increase in traffic on the bridge. (where do they think it is going to come from).

The whole project has been a joke right from the get go, and is a direct result of our previous Mayor, who now could care less if it is ever completed.

We should rename this town Duperville BC
OK,

That is it, I am out of her.
I have better things to do than continually read this negative babble.

the last one out, turn the lights out.
Hi Hindsight, I haven't moved yet, hopefully by September. I have lots of things to take care of, after all, I have lived here for 57 years.

I have also contributed allot of tax dollars to this place, allot of blood, sweat, and tears in the last 57 years. Even after I move, I will still be entitled to a comment or three, because I have an investment in this dump! A 57 year investment, way more than Danny boy! For all of you with oppinions, respect mine!
