Cooler temperatures and precipitation have slowed fire activity in the Prince George Fire Centre.
Prince George forest fire fighters have responded to 110 fires since April 1, with 38 fires caused by lightning and the remainder caused by human activity.
The fire danger rating is currently moderate throughout most of the Prince George Fire Centre with areas of high remaining in the Peace region. Rain and cooler temperatures are forecasted throughout most of the fire centre this week and extending into the weekend.
It’s a different story in the Cariboo Fire Centre where the public is being asked to be vigilant when enjoying campfires this weekend.
Since April 1, Cariboo Fire Centre crews have responded to 88 person-caused fires, more than twice as many compared to this time last year. Human-caused fires remain major causes of wildfire starts in the Cariboo.
It is the responsibility of each individual to ensure they are burning in a safe and responsible manner. Those who light a campfire are advised that if it escapes and causes a wildfire, they may be held liable for fire suppression-related costs, damages, and/or may face prosecution.
The Fire Centre also reminds the public that Category 2 and 3 open fires remain prohibited throughout the region. Category 2 and 3 fires include all open fires larger than one metre high and one metre wide
