Playing In NHL - Like Winning Lotto

By Ben Meisner

A young hockey player has about the same chance of playing in the NHL as winning the Lotto.

A study undertaken by a Canadian University shows that in 1999 , one half of the 28 selected in the 1st round played regular in the NHL. In the 3RD round 261 of 2,000 made it to the big show.

The dream of many a young Canadian is to one day play in the NHL. There are some obstacles to overcome.  Making it  through the hoops to even earn a spot on a major junior team is hard enough; the final prize is much more elusive.

Prince George product Ryan Howse who is a very good hockey player, playing for the Chilliwack Bruins was selected 74th overall, while Cougars player Marek Viedensky was selected 189th overall.

There have been a ton of young very good and very talented hockey players pass through this city since the Cougars arrived and through the Spruce Kings organization. Many of these young men have looked at their chances in the big leagues and opted instead for another career.

The point of all this, well when you are sitting at the kitchen table discussing Johnny's future, it is important to mention that he may not  end up making the millions that seems to measure in making it to the big leagues, in fact he may have to be content with a season as a minor pro. That in itself may be hard to explain to a young man, but as the saying goes, reality dictates, and the most recent study of the NHL only serves to foster that thinking.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Moronic hockey parents living through their kids aside, it's nice to see teenage boys (and girls) continue to keep the dream, passion, and goals alive. When I pass through the mall and see the "dawn of the dead" kids sitting there bored out of their minds, I'm happy to support my young hockey nut because he and his buddies spend all of their time at the gym, on the ice, travelling with their team, and not having any time to get in trouble or lead an unhealthy lifestyle. More power to them for having such committment to their dreams, even though it's such a long shot. I wish I had that focus when I was that age.

H-O-W-S-E

I'm the oldest out of four and now I am 39 and I can tell you my parents would of loved to put us in hockey but it was way to expensive. Hockey is for the well off folks. I am not a parent but I do know however it cost a lot of money to put kids into sports like ice hockey. This again is another example of keeping up with the Jones. And anyways the only folks that can afford to put their kids in ice hockey in this town are working for the jail. probation or some other bullshit authority figure that thinks their shit don't stink or a mill worker. Most of those people end up to be do gooders that offer nothing to the world expect pushing authority into your face and think that they are better then everyone eles just because they can become harsh narcs.
Eat that bitches
OK maybe Ben et al were right about editing some posts.... I am with Buzz: My kids are in hockey and they get so much out of it. I wish i had gone into hockey myself. While none of my kids are going to play professionally they ARE going to be able to play hockey their whole lives if they wish. Keeping them out of the mall aint a bad idea either.
Listen up buddy did your family fight in World War 1 or 2 if they didn't then shut up. Mine did so I have the right to say what I want as long as I don't threaten people. So put that in your hat and shove it where the sun don't shine. Edit Post. If it wasn't for families like mine you would not have any rights or nothing.
"chrislivingdowntown" Wow, you are out of control! You have taken this story about kids playing hockey to a different level! You have a lot of hate going on inside, me think!

Your comments about our families not, fighting in World War I or II are insulting to say the least. All our families, in one capacity or another fought in those wars. Why do you think you are so special??
chris ... shut the hell up ... and I have the right to say that ...as a memeber of my family has fought in each and every conflict Canada has been involved in since confederation, even the ones that arent big news makers ..

as for Ryan .... I have had the pleasure of meeting this boy and I truely hope he makes it to the big time ...Unfortunatly I dont think he will ever play for the Flames as they are an extremly Deep and young team right now.
