I believe if you need to use the cell phone you should pull over and stop. I see a lot of people pulled over doing just that. If you made it a rule people would follow it because I feel each individual realises the dangers involved. :}
I agree. No texting while driving either. Its just plain stupid.
How about putting on make up, or eating.

How about loud music. Shouldnt there be a limit on these boom boxes.

How about over bright head lights. This is a major problems when driving at nights. especially when it is on coming traffic. I think all the auto makers should have standards and it should be followed. If my brights are too powerfull, I will pay to get it down graded if everyone else has too.
I text and drive all the time..why not dont wanna miss out on something important when im driving.oh ya i eat and drive also and talk on my phone at the same time..
I don't think anyone needs to be in such a hurry that they can't pull over and answer their cell phone.

Yes there are lots of otherthings that are done while driving that probably should be either.

People, and I have beeen guilty from time to time, really need to start using some common sense while driving.

After all we are wheeling a ton or more of death around and it is very unforgiving...
In Malaysia nd Singapore, there's a big fine for driving while on the cell, almost twice as much a seatbelt fine for the first time offender! Doubles after that and so on...

One good example to follow and learn from.

Let's also go after the peope that drive with dogs on their laps!!!!!
I have mixed feelings, I agree that cell phone usage while driving can be distracting and is a large cause for traffic issues. I also see people putting on make up, reading maps, yelling at their kids in the back seat and not looking forward through the windshield, etc. There are no laws to be made to stop people doing any of those things, so I guess a cell phone law is just a blanket law for everything right?
I drive for work, my vehicle is my office and in todays convenient world, the problem is while I'm sitting on the side of the road someone else is selling my client their product.
So how do I efficiently do my job, serve my clients in the way they want and still do it at the speed of the law? unfortuneately todays customer doesn't want to wait for the law, they want it yesterday.
So my question is how will the law help me stay ahead of the competition while I am parked on the side of the road?

If anyone has any concrete options that make sense I would be glad to hear it, its easy to say its a bad thing, it has to stop ,but given the situation of alot of professional people, we don't need opinions, we need a solution that works for everyone.
any thoughts?

Talking on a cel hands-free is no different than talking to your mother in the seat beside you. Let's get real here for #$7%^@ sake! What's next? anyone with their mouth moving while driving is going to get a ticket? Is there going to be anything you can do while driving? Is thinking OK? Ahhh--the thought police of Orwell are upon us.
Besides - the cops yap on the phone and drive all the time. That doesn't make them a poorer or less focused driver does it??
Lets see now......

a. Seat belt must be done up.
b. No smoking while children under 15 are in vehicle
c. Children under 12 or weighing less than 80 lbs must be in a booster seat.
d. No talking on Cell Phone.
e. No drinking while driving. ie cannot be in excess of .08.

Police must be able to determine if in fact you were smoking. They must be able to prove you were using a cell phone, they must be able to prove your seat belt was not secure, and they must be able to either weigh or measure children to see if they fall within the category for booster seats. They must determine if you are over .08 and give you either a road side suspension, or charge you with impaired driving.

I wonder what the charge would look like if a driver was over .08 had children under 15 in the car and was smoking, did not use seatbelts or booster seats, and was talking on the cell phone.

We should be able to get this sucker on numerous charges and send him up the river for 10 years. Of course the kids would have no father, the wife no husband, and no income for the family, but what the hell, at least we enforced the law.

I suggest that they enact a law that all elderly people over the age of 70 must wear depends, and that the police, and one Government official will have to inspect these people on a regular basis to ensure that they are in fact complying with the law.
why wait til 70, sometimes I pee myself laughing reading the comments.
I would not be surprised if a significant number of people starting pulling over to take or make a call, that there will be an increase in rear ender accidents as well as accidnts as a result of people pulling back out into traffic.

If that becomes the case, watch "no stopping" signs all along the shoulders of roads.
I pulled over on Foothills a few months ago for a phone call... I was surprised to see a cop pull up behind me and approach my window to ask what I was doing pulled over on the side of the road at 10pm... not likely I'll do that again if I'm going to attract that kind of attention... it should be none of their business why I'm pulled over on the side of the road as far as I'm concerned, but I guess it looks 'suspicious'.

In any event I got rid of my cell phone shortly after that... its proven now that they cause brain cancer, so I figure I might as well eat asbestos if I need to talk on the phone all the time that bad. Sure saving a lot of money now too.
I'm not sure why there is a specific law required for cell phones (even though I hate the stupid things).

It doesn't matter if it's a cell phone or a sloppy burger, it's called driving without care and attention. A law for that already exists. Why on earth would a police officer start pulling over people with cell phones in use but let the Big Mac eater go flying on by, if they are not enforcing it already?

They can make a law if they wish if it makes some people feel warm and fuzzy, but it will be enforced about as much as the bike helmet law.
Palopu, is that 80 lbs. or 30 lbs.?
I have know some adult women who were 80 lbs. soaking wet, just wondering.
Eagle, it's okay to eat asbestos, it will line your stomach, so you can eat more jalapenos, just don't breath the fibers!
metalman.
just dispute all the tickets in court i still havent lost one yet
Ocassionally when in a vehicle with a co worker, we start talking and eventually we realize we just sat through a greenlight or at a stop sign for an extended period of time, for the simple reason we were not concentrating on the driving,. I suppose the same could happen if talking on a cell while driving. Trying to concentrate on driving and everything that comes with it is harder to do when you don't give it your full attention. I am not of the younger generation and I find that the younger people adapt to this kind of thing (multitasking) quicker and easier than those of us that are more mature. The younger generations are using cell phones at a younger age and text messaging is second nature to most of them. They probably think nothing of driving while text messaging and they are probably very good at it.
Metalman. Actually it states that all children over 40lbs must have a booster until they reach a height of 4ft 9in or the age of nine.

So theoretically the police officer should be carrying a Scale, a Tape Measure, and be prepared to ask the child for ID to determine its age.

Failure to comply with the law results in a $109.00 fine. Failure to wear a helmut while on a bike, results in a fine of $29.00 plus $5.00 victim services charge.
Of course there is not a chance that any of the sarcasm displayed here would turn into outright indignation and anger if your vehicle ended up being t-boned by a driver too busy on a cell phone to look left and right when pulling into the traffic (sp. your lane) from a side street?

No, not a chance.

"Failure to wear a helmut while on a bike,...)

I see them going by every day, on the sidewalk, whole families - no helmet! (I had a friend whose name was Helmut! :-). Funny.

Cheers!
