Over the past two years, the Insurance Corporation of B.C. has contributed $227-thousand dollars towards the City's capital projects as part of a joint effort to improve traffic safety in Prince George.
In a report submitted to City Council, Transportation Engineer, Glen Stanker, says road improvement project grants are approved by ICBC based on traffic safety analysis, and an economic evaluation of potential savings from reduced collisions to ensure there is a return on investment.
In 2005, grants from the crown corporation totalled more than $126-thousand dollars, with the largest chunk -- $54-thousand dollars -- going towards a quarter-million dollar project to construct a paved trail through the cemetary, from Cowart Road to Ferry Avenue. In this case, Stanker says the Ministry of Transportation shared half of the remaining project cost.
A 35-thousand dollar ICBC grant was used to construct a paved trail on the west side of Highway 97, from Handlen Road to Richet Rd at a total cost of $65-thousand dollars.
Stanker says city staff is currently working with ICBC to identify candidate city projects for 2006.
