Prince George, B.C.- David Luggi has been re-elected as Tribal Chief of the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council.
This is his second, third year term, and one he views as a special accomplishment “It is the first time in history that a member of a small band (Stellat’en) has won back to back elections” says Luggi “In a way I was the underdog heading into this as there were candidates from much larger bands.”
He says his key to success was being in tune with the issues, first and foremost, rights and title. “I guess the people liked what they saw, and wanted more of the same” says Luggi.
The final vote came down to 321 valid ballots for Luggi, and 278 for Colleen Erickson his closest competitor of the 5 other candidates. With 1095 valid ballots cast, that boils down to 29% for Luggi and 25% for Erikson.
While the vote may have been fragmented, Luggi says he will bring a message of unity to the upcoming Carrier Sekani Annual General Assembly “We are united in title and rights, we are doing this for the love of the land which is ours, and always will be.”
The 28th Annual General Assembly is set for the 15th and 16th and will take place in Takla Lake.
The election of Vice-Tribal Chief saw Terry Teegee elected with 257 votes.
