Prince George, B.C.- The Prince George Fire Centre will soon resume burn off activities on the Smith River Fire to prevent further growth. The Smith River Fire was caused by a lightning strike on June 1st 2009, and has burned 23,182 hectares. Before a burn off can take place careful consideration of weather, terrain, fuel loading and potential fire behaviour must to be taken into account. With the current favourable conditions forest service staff will focus activities on the west side of the fire. The purpose of this process is to help eliminate remaining fuel between the fire and the Alaska highway. Due to burn off procedures smoke will increase in the area and may cause some delays along the Alaska Highway. Check with www.drivebc.ca for any travel advisories on that section of highway
