Prince George, B.C.- The Railway and Forestry Museum is facing a new challenge. CN has advised the Museum that it will have to vacate the CN building being used for the storing and restoration of some artifacts. The building has to be vacated by the end of August. “This will result in a number of assets being exposed to the elements” says Kirk Gable, President of the Railway and Forestry Museum.
The loss of the use of facility is connected to te economic downturn says Mayor Dan Rogers. “In correspondence I have had with CN, they have indicated there are cost savings even if the building is empty. So this is a ripple effect of the economic downturn which has impacted so many sectors.”
The loss of the building means the Museum will also lose the use of a special crane which has been a key element in restoration projects.
CN has offered to lay track to allow the movement of the rail equipment to the other side of River Road to the museum's site. “ The museum doesn’t have a choice,” says Gable “ we’re going to have to move out, but there will be issues as the artifacts will now be exposed to the elements.”
There had been some security issues at the CN site. A Caboose that had been fully intact when donated to the museum, has been vandalized because of the lack of security at the CN building. The weather is taking its own toll. Artifacts that had been refurbished are showing new signs of rust and wear.
