Prince George, B.C.- The Foothills Regional Landfill has had one very busy year in 2008. In a report to the Board of Directors, the following details were noted:

• 101,825 tonnes representing 95% of the regional municipal solid waste stream was managed at the Foothills facility.
• 9,290 tonnes of the material received at the Landfill was recycled through onsite waste reduction initiatives. This represents 74% of all Regional District recycling efforts.
• 95,535 tonnes of waste, or 98% of all waste land filled at Regional District facilities was buried at the Foothills site
• 7,770 tonnes of yard and garden waste and residual debris from urban mountain pine beetle loggingoperations were received in 2008

Meantime, the Provincial Ministry of the Environment has received and reviewed the Solid Waste Management Plan for the regional District of Fraser fort George. While the Ministry has approved the plan, it has also outlined three conditions for that approval:

1.      The regional district must “define and enact a Plan Monitoring and Advisory Committee as soon as possible to facilitate on going public involvement during implementation of the plan
2.      Before   creating bylaws to regulate the management of municipal solid waste or recyclables, there must e meaningful consultations with potentially affected stakeholders
3.       The regional district must submit an annual plan implementation progress report by March 31st of each year and a review of the effectiveness of the plan at the end of five years.

Down here in the big smoke I see where in some areas they are on the same type of auto load containers as PG & they have 3 containers
1 for recycle, 1 for compost, 1 for waste and the same truck does them all
Maybe a little more forward looking when changing to a new system
I still think the former garbage crusher guy got a raw deal, they got rid of him because his price was "too low" In their apparent wisdom they decided that he could not do the work for that price. Well, he stated that his equipment was all paid for, and he has been flattening garbage at that landfill for years now, so does indeed know what he is doing. I say that the fix was in, someone wanted someone else to get the contract. That would be our tax dollars hard at work. God I hate politics.
