Province Extends Emergency Social Services

WEST KELOWNA – Emergency social services coverage has been extended beyond the normal 72 hours, for an additional three days, for evacuees impacted by Kelowna-area fires, announced Premier Gordon Campbell today while visiting the region.
“I’ve had a chance to view the fire’s devastating impact from the air, talked to emergency responders, and seen the impact this has had on the residents of West Kelowna,” said Premier Campbell “By doubling the province’s support to evacuees, this ensures their ongoing food, clothing and lodging needs are met until they can get back to their neighbourhoods and daily routines.”
Emergency Social Services (ESS) support is typically available for 72 hours during which time evacuees should immediately plan their next steps by contacting their insurance agents, families and friends, or local non-profit agencies. In exceptional circumstances, on a case-by-case basis, the Province may authorize an extension of ESS services. The Province is doubling the time support is available in this incident from three to six days and will continue to monitor the situation to determine any further steps.
Any individuals who may have paid out-of-pocket for ESS-eligible expenses, such as hotel accommodation, should visit the ESS registration centre and fill out a reimbursement form for review.
Since Saturday, approximately 7,800 evacuees have registered with ESS and about 7,000 have been provided with support, including accommodation, food, comfort kits and clothing. Thirty trained emergency services volunteers continue to assist evacuees at Mount Boucherie Secondary School, and an information line remains active at 778 797-2269.
Currently 4,750 people remain evacuated and a further 12,000 are on evacuation alert due to three fires burning in and around West Kelowna. Earlier today, approximately 6,000 Glenrosa residents were allowed to return home but remain on alert.
