BC Rail Trial - Not Likely
By Ben Meisner
As the BC Rail saga drags on it is becoming more apparent that the matter is highly unlikely to ever get to trial.
At one point, a few years back it might have been possible to see the matter end in a trial, but consider the situation today. The Liberal government would like to see the matter go away. They are in power, Bassi and Virk are small players in the bigger picture, but the stage is being set to have them disappear off the radar screen.
Simply take your (so far) unidentified witness who was prepared to testify but only in secret, and try to force him (or her) to come to the party. That testimony can't move towards a trial because the Crown has made a deal not to identify this witness, so they can’t proceed, hence the charges are dropped.
Then there is the matter of the Province “losing e-mails”. That in itself is good enough to see the charges dismissed, and as the hearings proceed the Liberal government would like to see the whole thing go away, that is of course go away without them being in any way associated with the dropping of the charges.
So what’s going to happen? Stay tuned, the NDP (and a lot of other people) would finally like to see the details of the sale...oops.... lease of BC Rail to CN see the light of day. Is there some dirty laundry there? Of course.
But trying to determine who pushed the buttons is not going to be an easy task, unless of course the NDP form the next government and even at that late date, you can bet your bottom dollar, the issue will come back to haunt the Liberals.
I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.
