Wind Fans Terrace Mtn Fire
By 250 News
KAMLOOPS – Last night the Terrace Mountain Fire grew 2500 hectares and is now estimated at 7520 hectares. Winds and dry forest fuels were factors contributing to the growth in the southeast corner of the fire.
Yesterday’s fire growth was not a result of the burning off activity; this fire burned over the fireguard that was built. Extremely dry fuels, wind speed, and wind direction all contributed to the fire’s vigorous growth and behaviour.
Resources for this fire include 237 firefighters, 16 helicopters, 83 pieces of heavy equipment, and airtankers as needed. The Kamloops Fire Centre has a unified coordinated response with over 60 Central Okanagan Regional District fire department personnel and Tolko Industries.
The fire is 30 percent contained and suppression efforts will continue throughout the day to increase the fire perimeter containment. Yesterday, Structural Protection Units were set up to protect structures in the High Creek area and aerial attack of the fire will continue this morning.
This morning crews are setting priority areas from the air and will place crews where it is safe, where heavy equipment can be nearby to set up control lines from anchor points.
The evacuation order has been reissued and extended; for more information on evacuations please call the Emergency Operations Centre at (250) 469 8493.
