Prince George, B.C. – The  City has awarded the contract for the first phase of  improvements to River Road to Sharp Construction of Prince George.  They provided the lowest of the four bids received in the tender process.  Their bid was $2,458,014.30.  The budget for this  first phase was  $3.1 million. Phase one covers the  stretch of River Road from the limits of the Cameron St. Bridge to the east leg of Foley Crescent.

The full project carries an estimated price tag of $7.5 million.  Phase one is expected to be completed by late October of this year.

Phase two covers the road from Foley Crescent to First Avenue and will be up for tender next year.

The project consists of road and drainage upgrades to approximately 3.6 kilometers of industrial road. Key elements include road widening and reconstruction, focusing on upgrades to achieve a collector standard, storm drainage improvements, ground water collection, bicycle lanes, street lighting, left had turning movements into the Intermodal Facility and Lakeland Mills, access driveways into existing properties and raising of the existing road profile to meet recommended 200 year flood plain levels.Up to $3.5 million has been funded by a grant from the Canadian Government Asia Pacific Gateway Corridor Initiative Transportation Infrastructure Fund (APGCITIF).

The River Road Improvement project is intended to improve safety for all road users. Heavy truck traffic is projected to increase, as this is the main industrial road to and from the CN Intermodal facility.

Good luck to Sharp Construction
WOW, someone from IDL must have forgot to send the monthly slush money to city hall!
The CN Intermodal yard has been up and running for over a year, however there is a slight problem. Guess What????

There are very few containers being loaded in Prince George. In fact in the first year of operation there were none. So far in the second year there have been less than 100. What this means is that the concept of loading Containers in Prince George to Prince Rupert has fell flat on its ass, and it wont be long before the CN Terminal is either leased out, or closed,.

The City knows that there is no traffic to or from the CN Yard, nor is there any traffic coming and going from Winton Global as it has been shut down. The only companies left operating on River Road are Interior Whse, Overland Ex;press, Brink Forest Products, and Lakeland Mills, Imperial Oil Bulk Station.

They are spending this money because they got it from the Federal Government, and not because there is any real need for this upgrade. Even those business's that are still operating are on shaky ground because of the recession, and they could scale back also.
