Health Care Cuts a Betrayal Says James

Victoria, B.C. – Despite the Campbell government’s election promise to protect health care, the Fraser Health Authority confirmed deep cuts are coming to patients in Fraser Health, Carole James and the New Democrats said today.

James was referring to the FHA report released late yesterday afternoon, that says it will cut up to 9900 surgeries, downgrade ERs, slash services for mental health and addictions, reduce diagnostic services and cut seniors care.

“These cuts will lead to people waiting in pain longer,” said New Democrat Leader Carole James. “The cuts will do long-term damage to public health care in the region to make up for the B.C. Liberals duplicity and incompetence.”

The Fraser Health Authority report yesterday outlined cuts which include:

- 10 to 15 percent of scheduled surgeries from Sept. 09 to March 10

- Freezing of MRIs at last year’s budgeted levels

- 11 contracts ended for mental health services including programs to assist victims of abuse

- Ending contracts for the New Westminster Domestic Violence Response Team

- Ending 12 Seniors’ programs in Abbotsford, Burnaby, Chilliwack, Langley, Maple Ridge, Mission, New Westminster, White Rock and the Tri-Cities

- Closures of residential care beds

- Closures of two seniors day care programs in Tri Cities and cuts in day programs in Burnaby, Mission, Agassiz, Port Coquitlam, Abbotsford and White Rock

- Mission Memorial ER downgrade

- Hospitalists program downgrade.

- Closure of beds at Fraser Canyon Hospital in Hope

- Significant new fees to patients for ambulance transfers

“To get elected, Premier Campbell and the every B.C. Liberal MLA promised British Columbians that they would protect patient services,” said James. “The deep health cuts announced late yesterday at Fraser Health puts a lie to that promise and confirms the Campbell government did not tell voters the truth.

“The Premier sat beside me in the 2009 Leader’s debate and promised British Columbians that his government would protect health care– his words,” said James. “Now, after the election, British Columbians are faced with dramatically longer wait times and long-term damage to the health care system. This is a betrayal of public trust.”

New Democrat Health Critic Adrian Dix said the cuts at Fraser Health are on top of planned cuts at every health authority in B.C. “The Campbell government knew that they would cut patient care and hid that from the public,” said Dix.

“In February, the New Democrats said there would be at least a $320 million shortfall at the health authorities. Then Health Minister George Abbott said there would be ‘no budget shortfall’," said Dix. "We said there would be deep cuts in patient’s services, such as the surgical cuts, as announced yesterday, and Mr. Abbott said we were ‘fear mongering.’

"The Campbell government is attempting to overstate the administrative cuts they are making and underestimate the dramatic impact on patient services," noted Dix. "Yesterday, they claimed their service cuts added up to only $15 million, an estimate that is demonstrably untrue. And not one of the B.C. Liberal Cabinet Ministers or the Premier is around to take responsibility for this fiasco.

"The truth is now clear. They knew what they were saying was untrue."

James said that the B.C. Liberals have combined deception with incompetence in their mismanagement of public health care. She said that hiding the truth has resulted in last minute planning, leading to short-sighted cuts that will have a lasting impact on the delivery of public health care.

“The Campbell government has badly mismanaged public health care, consistently putting their own short-term political interests ahead of British Columbians,” said James. “The deep cuts to surgeries and patient care at Fraser Health are a vivid illustration of that deception and incompetence.”

This is just the beggining of phasing out health care as we know it.
Our health care system is so good, we abuse it. That is why it is taxed to the max.
I see a lot of criticism and no solutions. This is not new for Carole James and the NDP. This is probably why they have a hard time getting elected.
I agree MrPG. Saying we need more health care resources is far from a brilliant analysis. Figuring out a way to pay for it, not that would be impressive.
Gordo's got to pay for the games, hasn't he?
Darn it, I had post #2 before someone mentioned the Olympics. Who had #5?
MrPG people talking about the olympics all the time. They sound just like you talking about the NDP.

I am wondering why this reaction did not come when the Vancouver Island Health Authority announced similar cuts just a few weeks ago.

What is happening with the Northern Health Authority?
Must be pretty easy to be a politcian these days..Sounds like all you have to do is find out what the other guys are doing and then you run to the press and tell the public what a shitty job the other guy is doing..Why do we even have elections anymore? None of them have any credibliy. Instead of an election next time just set up a poker table in the parliament building and they can bullshit, bluff and call their way to power, which is exactly how our political system works right now.. Frustrated in PG!!
"What is happening with the Northern Health Authority"

I've heard through the grapevine that the NHA is actually in a better financial position than some of the other Health Authorities in the Province, with the result that they don't need to go on a massive cost cutting undertaking.

From what I've heard, many of these other areas were perpetually overbudget by huge amounts when running their operations and just relied on the cash to keep coming in to offset the poor management of their actual budgets. Now that the government has said "no more dough" they have to cut because they have no other option. This is all anecdotal, though it's not exactly unusual for government operations to go through that type of situation.

Are these "cuts" to health care or is it more a case of mismanagement of the dollars that they do have? Perhaps they are just underfunded?
Is it possible that the demand for many of the services has been reduced, since so many (low income or no income) people have been moved out of the lower mainland up to places like PG, Mackenzie, Terrace, Smithers etc.?

Anyone notice a lot of new faces wandering around downtown in the last 6 months? Hm, maybe our great weather is the attraction.

How about a little visit to St. Vincent de Paul or Salvation Army and ask if there has been a huge increase in folks looking for food?

We have become a dumping ground for the less fortunate and we do not have the resources to provide help for an extended period. It would be nice if our provincial representatives would also provide additional funding to look after the additional people they are placing in our part of the province.
"They sound just like you talking about the NDP. "

Yeah, it's exactly the same... (rolling eyes)
And people wonder why I'm against the Olympics and PG bidding for the winter games? It's because of the tax dollars that could be used for stuff like this, to at least maintain the existing health care.
MrPG maybe I should have said that you go ON and ON. Like a skipping record. You've probably heard that before I sure?
Just one more time for you. "Olympics,Carole James". LOL

As usual, the cuts (health care) completely ignore a major problem; there is far too much administration and middle management bureaucracy in the NHA and probably the other health authorities as well. They could easily save hundreds of thousands of dollars by trimming costs at the mid to higher levels of management, but as those are the people that make these decisions, I suppose their own positions are safe.
