Burn Off Increases Fire Guard
By 250 News
Williams Lake, B.C – Last night, fire crews successfully conducted a burn off on the northwest flank of the Lava Canyon fire, 15 km southwest of Alexis Creek. The burn off created a larger fire guard by effectively removing patches of unburned fuel between the Chilko River and the Lava Canyon fire.
Smoke from last night’s operations could be seen as far as the state of Oregon.
Yesterday afternoon the Lava Canyon Fire also increased in size on the southeast flank, and is now estimated to be 20,503 hectares. No homes or structures are located in this area.
Resources today include 73 firefighters assisted by six helicopters, eleven pieces of heavy equipment and 16 support staff. The Office of the Fire Commissioner is also on site and will be installing structural protection units in the Scum Lake area and on some structures at Brittany Creek.
