Lava Canyon Fire Now More than 34 Thousand Hectares
By 250 News
WILLIAMS LAKE – GPS mapping shows that the Lava Canyon fire is now approximately 34388 hectares.
This increase in size is partially due to more accurate mapping, and partially due to actual fire growth. The fire has been growing in a north easterly direction; however is currently not threatening any structures on the western side of the Chilko River.
Today fire suppression will continue with 90 fire fighters on site working with 20 pieces of heavy machinery to construct fuel free fire guards. If conditions permit, fire crews will burn off from these guards, removing any un-burnt fuel between the fire and the Scum Lake community.
An evacuation order remains in effect for the Scum Lake area and 11 residents have been evacuated. For more information, please contact the Cariboo Regional District at
250-392-4238.
The Newton-Whitewater Road, also known as the 7000 road, is closed from approximately one kilometre south of the Siwash Bridge. Traffic controls are in place. We ask the public to refrain from entering this area.
Smoke will continue to be an issue. For more information on smoke and your health please see the information available at www.interiorhealth.ca
