Prince George, B.C.- The Miller Addition Citizens Coalition and PACHA will welcome Denny Larson,  founder of Global Community Monitor and Bucket Brigade to Prince George next week.

Larson will be here September 18th and 19th to help the community organize itself to be able to take odor samples.  Larson will be teaching residents how to monitor the environment for odors, when and how to take odor samples and where to send the samples for scientific analysis.

Global Community Monitor is an international human rights, not for profit organization that has worked with communities in 20 countries including Canada. The Bucket Brigade works with communities to record pollution incidents systematically and effectively by taking samples while the pollution is in progress.

“Odor is a problem for our community “ says Dave Fuller president of PACHA “ It hinders economic development, we hear constantly of people leaving Prince George 'because it stinks' and there are possible health effects. We want to do odor testing to find out who is responsible for these odors and what is really in them”

Dr Marie Hay a representative from  the MACC group states “Everyone is concerned about small particulates and know about the serious diseases they cause in lungs, hearts and brains. However they don’t really understand or know about the adverse health consequences of the volatile organic compounds and the sulfur bound chemicals that we are breathing in when it stinks.  The families of the Miller Addition are suffering. They cannot wait for years to resolve the untenable situation of foul air.   Currently local pulp mills stand to inherit up to 180 million dollars in tax monies this year from a "black liquor subsidy" .They absolutely need to start by first using this money to clean up their pollution”.

mmmm.......what's that smell? oooh that smell.
“We want to do odor testing to find out who is responsible for these odors and what is really in them”

Come on now. Are we really unsure of the source of the odor? This line of thinking is exactly why we've gone nowhere with this issue.
Catch that odour in a jar and show it to yer friends.
We are sure of the source of the smells. The suspects contend that it it not them and that it really is not as bad as it seems. What PACHA is doing is providing unequivocal proof. Apparently we cannot trust those charged with ensuring our safety and healthy living conditions.

One example: They banned beehive burners decades ago, yet industry approached the regulators and said that they could not afford to comply with the new emissions regulation and asked for extension after extension.

Industry says it is not them, that it is fireplaces and recreational fire pits.

Home owners say it is not them, it is industry.

Still others say leave industry alone, they are providing jobs and economic growth.
Yesterday I said "jar". Today they said "bucket". Close, but no cigar. Maybe next time.
while walking the dog earlier I had a thought about these "stinky air buckets". Supposing PACHA captures mucho buckets of stink, just imagine PACHA trying to get them across the US border to reach Caleefornia. Stopping at the US border, the guard is going to ask where they are going. They will say to California. The guard will ask the purpose of the visit. The reply will be, "To deliver these buckets of stinky air from Prince George." Sounds reasonable, don't it? Not to these big gun toting paranoid Yanks. He will ask you to pull up just ahead. And he will ask you to open one randomly chosen "bucket of stink". You comply. What a stupid ridiculous scenario. Americans. Paranoid ninnies with big guns. Good luck solving this problem.
