Prince George, B.C.- There is word of yet another deal to sell the idled Worthington Mackenzie pulp mill.
Although an agent for the owner has indicated details on the sale will be made as early as today, Minister of Forests and Range, Pat Bell, says he is not willing to be that optimistic “I think it would be premature to say there is a deal, although there are hopes something can come together fairly quickly” Bell says the employees and the people of Mackenzie have had their hopes raised in the past, only to have them dashed .
Bell says the window of opportunity to sell the mill for it’s full value won’t be open for long “It is known the mill is not going to be kept warm over the winter and the value will be reduced if it is allowed to freeze. So naturally there is a desire to complete a deal as soon as possible, likely before the end of October.”
While reports suggest there is a deal pending with the United Petroleum Group of China, Bell says they   are not the only ones interested “United Petroleum has been one of the contenders, but there have been several other players in the mix (more than 2).”
According to some reports, United Petroleum is prepared to keep the mill warm until the deal is finalized in December.
Bell doesn’t want to jump the gun “I think it is premature for anyone to speculate on a final deal.”

Seems to me the Chinese Paper Corp. bought the idled Prince Rupert Mill a number of years ago, and made some sort of arrangement with the First Nations in Kitwanga for timber, however the Pulp Mill never opened. I beleive the logs are being exported to China.

In any event we will have to wait and see. Buying the mill does not necessarily mean that it will open. They would also have to start some of the sawmills in order to get woodchips, or they would have to whole log chip which is much more expensive., The chips from the Canfor Mill in Mackenzie are going to the Prince George Pulp Mills.
Hopefully this comes to fruition. The people of Mackenzie have had their hopes dashed enough times in the last 2 years.
Fingers crossed!
Heard the deal fell through from local Mackenziets. Have to get official announcement.
