Prince George, B.C.- The Federal Government has provided just under a million dollars for upgrades to the CN Centre, the Coliseum ad the Kin 1 Arena.
( at right Prince George Peace River M.P. Jay Hill  and Mayor Dan Rogers  make the announcement)
The dollars represent about half of the $2 million need for a variety of upgrades:
  • roof replacement,
  • installation of a dehumidification system,
  • replacement of a chiller,
  • installation of energy recovery equipment,
  • condenser replacement and
  • the installation of some fixed equipment such as security systems, equipment for the kitchens or concessions, and
  • skate flooring .
The Federal government will pay $929,334, and the City is paying the balance. “This is allowing us to improve the guts” says Mayor Dan Rogers, “This allows us to maintain the structures, and will allow us to free up some money from our capital plan and move forward on items such as upgrades to the dressing rooms.”
The Mayor says the upgrades will also be a plus for the City’s bid to host the 2015 Canada Winter Games as well as improve the energy efficiency of the facilities.

Maybe with this money they can keep at least a couple of showers functioning. And just maybe they'll put a few towel hooks outside the showers. The Kin change rooms are an absolute disgrace. None of them are big enough for a team of 15 kids. For a men's team it's a joke. The Coliseum is actually well maintained and is still a nice place to play hockey with reasonable change rooms. But something has to be done about the Kin centers. The lounge area between Kin 1&2 is another disgrace. It is ideally located for a nice lounge or pub and with little investment could become a money-maker for the city. There are a great many men's teams that would support such a facility. I sincerely hope this money is not wasted.
another hockey fan?
Mr. Disturber has a point. The Kin dressing rooms are small and filthy - barely fit for human occupation, let alone a bunch of sweaty hockey players.

Considering how much money it costs to play at these facilities, it's sad that more money doesn't go to cleaning and maintenance, especially in the Kin Centre's case.
The place needs to be updated.

A pub would definitely be a great idea but I'm sure the place across the street would put up a fight.
Lucky them....education (and other areas) are hurting in this province and these facilities get federal and city funding?!?

Come on, let's get our priorities straight. Play hockey outdoors/on the ponds like our parents did and EDUCATE our children instead. They are the real future of the province and country. Unless of course, the federal government doesn't want our kids to be educated (more dumbies like our current provincial leaders).

It's easier to control the uneducated and/or disadvantaged, so that's where they want everyone.
Oh relax. The infrastructure needs upkeep as well. We are well overdue for seeing some tax dollars come back into the region for this kind of stuff.
Thanks Feds, another excuse to spend more of our city taxes.
I agree MrPG. I don't play or watch hockey but I still support this. The Kin Centres are enjoyed by many of all ages, not just kids. It's also great exercise, which we all are in need of. The facilities should be maintained. I'd rather see our federal tax dollars be spent in PG than some where else and I sure would rather see the money spent on this rather than a PAC.
The responsibility for the upkeep of City buildings is the Citys. If they didnt blow all our tax dollars on stupid projects, like a new Cameron St., Bridge, $15Million or $4million to upgrade River Road, or $1Million for a replay board at CN Centre, plus the cost of operating it. Plus money on trail systems, not to mention the $300,000.00 per year for the Northern Sport Centre,, and the $600,000.00 per year to operate the CN Centre, plus the proposed $40 Million for the Police Station, $40 Million for a PAC, and another $40 Million for the Cut off Road from Highway 16 to 97 to support some vague dream in that area.

If they didnt do all that BS. Then maybe they would have some money available for local projects that require upgrading.

What the hell is the Federal Government doing supplying money for this type of project.....Surely they have bigger fish to fry. If there wasnt the constant threat of an election you wouldnt be getting a red cent for these types of projects.

Its time the City started to look after our tax dollars in a responsible manner.
I pay taxes to the city, the province and the feds. There's only one pocket as far as I'm concerned, and if the feds want to kick in some of our dollars for infrastructure, great!

As far as the threat of an election goes, I doubt Dick or Jay are scared of losing their seats.
My point is the areas of responsibility between the Four Levels of Government get blurred.

We have too much of this BS where the Feds or the Province gives us x number of dollars and we have to match it, and build some kind of a facility that we probably dont really need. We do this just to get the money, and in doing so, we totally screw up the system.

We dont need the Feds to tell us how to spend our money in the Citys.

The upgrade on River Road is a prime example. No one on River Road asked for an upgrade, other than paving. The Federal Government using the CN Container Facility as an excuse was able to give the City $4 Million dollars for this upgrade. The City then matched it with $4 Million of our Tax Dollars, that they will have to borrow, and then they will upgrade the road.

What the hell is that all about.

When will we learn to spend money in a sane, and mature manner????

That $4 million that they are going to borrow could have gone a long way to paving roads in the City.
