ALEXIS CREEK – Significant smoke from the Lava Canyon wildfire is coming from pockets of active burning well within the fire perimeter, and is not threatening containment lines.

With continued warm and dry conditions, areas of un-burnt fuel within the containment lines are burning. Although the smoke is visible to surrounding areas, residents can be assured that this active burning is to be expected, and is not a cause for concern.

Crews continue to patrol the fire edge and extinguish hot spots. Many areas of the fire perimeter are being demobilized and equipment is being removed. Firefighters are focussing their efforts on the north and northeast flanks of the fire.

The Lava Canyon Fire is 66, 719 hectares and is 100 percent contained. On site today are 161 firefighters, three pieces of heavy equipment, five helicopters and 42 support staff.

Due to the containment of the fire and diminished fire activity, the Evacuation Alert has been rescinded for affected properties north of the fire. For more information please contact the Cariboo Regional District at 250-392-3351.

An area restriction remains in place, and includes road blocks by security personnel. Anyone travelling to the area surrounding the fire is encouraged to see the restrictions in effect by visiting www.bcwildfire.ca. Restriction details are found within the bans and restrictions section. Please note that anyone who enters the restriction area without prior approval is in violation of Section 11 of the Wildfire Act.
