Prince George, B.C.- A special training session gets underway in Prince George today for first responders.
The 40 hour workshop is called Crisis Intervention Team Training and is the result of a B.C. Coroner’s report following the in custody death of a male who was in a mental health crisis.
The report (A Study in Blue and Grey) states “… more people with a mental illness live in the community. Unfortunately, community supports have not expanded proportionately to make up for the loss of institutional services or for the increased need brought about by an increasing population.”
Over the course of the week, first responders will take part in discussion about mental health and addictions, understanding mental illness, drug induced psychosis the B.C. Mental Health Act and community specific approaches and responses to a person in a mental health crisis.
The week long educational worshop is being held at the Ramada Hotel in Prince George.
