Clearwater,  B.C.- The Ministry of Environment has named Clearwater Conservation Officer Kevin Van Damme as the Outstanding Conservation Officer of the Year for 2008.

Van Damme joined the Conservation Officer Service (COS) in 1992 and was initially posted to the Lower Mainland where he proved himself an effective CO. Several years later, an opportunity arose for Van Damme to transfer to the COS office in Clearwater, where he remains today.

The CO of the Year Award is awarded to a CO, on the recognition by his or her peers, to have gone above and beyond the normal call of duty to exemplify the values of the Conservation Office Service: integrity, public service and protection of the environment.

Van Damme is recognized for his outstanding commitment to the COS and numerous accomplishments:
·         Having researched, designed and developed a business plan to build a prototype cougar trap. By volunteering his labour and working with a fabricator, a prototype was manufactured and tested with positive results.
·         Service as a founding member of the Predator Attack Team, and since then, a driving force in the development and adoption of new methods and technologies.
·         Dealing with the public in a professional manner, and going the extra distance when dealing with youth and seniors.
·         Interest in and commitment to significant investigative challenges.
·         Duties as an active member and “road boss” of a surveillance team when posted in the Lower Mainland.
·         Service as file co-ordinator of a successful undercover operation into the illegal sale of white sturgeon.

Good job Mr. Van Damme. That has to be a much tougher job now that the Province seems to think that investing in CO's is a waste of money.
It is a waste of money now that status natives can legally hunt at night with a lamp. What an assinine judge to hand down such a blatant disregard and insult for the hunters of Canada.
Your chances of shooting a moose on the Beaver Road are next to zero because after dark there is a steady stream of natives with rifles patrolling until dawn.
