The provincial government has appointed three British Columbians to sit on the Electoral Boundaries Commission.
Louise Burgart of Fort St. James, a lifelong educator who is currently owner/director of Apex Mountain Resort is one of the three. She is a retired superintendent and past president of the B.C. School Superintendents’ Association. A career educator, she has worked as an assistant superintendent, principal, vice-principal and teacher. Ms. Burgart has also been a member of the B.C. College of Teachers since 1988 and a councillor since 2003.

Attorney General Wally Oppal has also  announced that the Hon. Bruce Cohen, a justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, will chair the panel, and the third member will be chief electoral officer Harry Neufeld.

The commission’s role is to recommend electoral boundaries for the province. The 2005 commission will make recommendations for electoral boundaries under a Single Transferable Vote (STV) system, as well as under the current electoral system. This dual mandate is to ensure that B.C. voters have the best possible information when they go to vote in a new referendum on adopting STV in 2008.

The commission will seek community input through provincewide consultation before developing its recommendations.

The initial report will be submitted to the Speaker by Aug. 15, 2007 and the final report will be submitted by February 2008.
