Mackenzie Emergency Room Under Pressure

A physician shortage in Mackenzie is putting some extra stress on the emergency room and the two local doctors.

Northern Health is asking residents of Mackenzie to make sure  they use the hospital’s emergency room appropriately due to a reduced number of physicians in the community over the holidays.

Mackenzie needs two more physicians, with recruitment underway to fill those positions. The two physicians currently in Mackenzie are working very hard to meet care needs, and are receiving support from locum physicians.

“Mackenzie Hospital’s Emergency Room is open, and patients will get the care they need,” said Site Manager Barb Crook. “To ease stress on the permanent and locum physicians, residents should visit the Emergency Room after-hours only if they have an urgent medical condition. Patients with a non-urgent health issue can book an appointment with a family doctor during regular office hours.”

Patients who don’t know whether their condition would warrant an emergency room visit can first call the BC NurseLine at 1-866-215-4700. Registered nurses at this line can provide health advice 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
