Prince George, B.C.-  Four people who work with the travel office of BCAA in Prince George, will be unemployed by the end of this year.

The company is closing its storefront travel offices across the province as it has found it too difficult to compete with the growing use of   direct booking over the internet. “It is a changing travel world” says Suzanne Milino, Vice President Sales and Service with BCAA, “twenty one of our travel offices will be closing, including the one in Prince George.” The difficult economic times are also cited as a reason for the closure. In all, 157 people will be losing their jobs throughout the province as a result of the closures.

Province wide, the travel offices of BCAA will be reduced to a skeleton staff by mid December, and travel bookings will cease to be offered by BCAA by January.

BCAA will continue to operate its other divisions and you will be able to book trips on line or over the phone (to the Burnaby service centre) but face to face service will become a thing of the past.

Milino says those who have booked travel need not worry, the trips will be honoured. She says BCAA attempted to sell the travel division of its business, but wasn’t able to find a buyer.

Guess I'll just have to pull my membership after 20 years. I pay about $200.00 per year for a just in case in happens.
Even without the travel services I think the membership is worth it. One tow truck bill can more than pay for the cost.
Isn't this just referring to BCAA travel offices? I'm not reading anything about cutting towing services.
I booked a cruise thru the PG office about a month ago and it was sure nice to talk to agent face to face. Although the internet may be more convenient, nothing bets the personal touch. I think this is a poor choice for BCAA.
I tied to book my tavel plans thru them. I called 3 times, they never returned my calls no wonder they are going under no service.
"I think this is a poor choice for BCAA."

I don't think BCAA had much of a choice. The travel operation wasn't viable and they couldn't even find anyone who would buy it from them.
That's too bad. It is a close by and convienient place to get a passport photo done.
As an employee of BCAA I would like to let everyone know we are still doing everything we offered before except the travel agents in the office will not be there. We still will have a call center and online travel available on bcaa.com. We will still have membership, home insurance, icbc, passport pictures as well as maps etc. We will not be closing any offices. Please call or come see us.
