Prince George B.C.- The Spirit  of the North Healthcare Foundation is looking for a new Executive Director.

After 15 years of being with the Foundation and three years at its helm, David Wharrie is retiring.

“It’s a mutual thing” says Wharrie. He had planned on retiring by March of 2011 and that just wouldn’t match up with a strategic plan that would be 3, 5 or seven years in length, “It wouldn’t be fair to tell the Foundation Board I would be here through that period and then bow out “ says Wharrie.  He also says he believes it will be good for the Foundation to have someone fresh at the helm .

He says the Foundation has given him an early retirement incentive so the search can get underway immediately for a new Executive Director who will be able to help develop the longer term strategic plan that will meld with the longer term strategic plan for Northern Health.

Over the 18 years of it’s existence, the Foundation has raised more than $21 million dollars. “I have been privileged and honoured to work with awesome donors, staff, volunteers and Board Members who understand that to make a difference, to have an impact on health care, we have to work together, I believe we have been able to make that difference. It has been a wonderful time and I look forward to being able to do a little traveling and to continue my work in the community.”

Wharrie and his wife Janice have both been tied to a number of community volunteer efforts and he says they will continue to do so and while they may travel, he has no intention of leaving Prince George, “I love what I do, the people here are incredible. We all know of people who have moved to other regions only to say they wish they had never left because they miss the people.”

David Wharrie’s last day with the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation will be December 1st.
