Ottawa, Ontario - New Democrat Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen has introduced a private members bill in the House of Commons to end the current practice of RCMP investigating its own members when there has been a serious in custody incident.

Cullen’s bill calls for a special civilian investigations unit to probe such cases.  Cullen  pictures a unit modelled after the civilian team in place in Ontario.  While members of other  political parties have been receptive to his bill, Cullen says the Conservative government has refused to meet with him to talk about it.

He brought forth the bill in the wake of the Ian Bush case.  The 22 year old died from a single gunshot wound to the back of the head during a struggle with an arresting officer at the Houston B.C. detachment 4 years ago.

That incident , along with the shooting of Kevin St. Arnaud in Vanderhoof, and the death of Robert Dziekanski at the Vancouver airport, raised the issue of RCMP investigating themselves to a new level.
In all three cases, the officers involved  were cleared of any wrong doing.

Ian’s mother, Linda Bush, was in Ottawa for the introduction of the bill. She says she is hopeful the bill will make the RCMP more accountable for its actions.

I am sooooo sick of this topic...

Keep up the good work RCMP officers! The silent majority still support you and your efforts!
Tazed--you are obviously an RCMP person or one close to them. You should not be sick of getting actual facts. Facts from people with no agendas and nothing to hide, allow people to move on positively. The current RCMP practises have created many negative comments against the RCMP. Tazed---speak up --would you prefer negative or positive comments about the RCMP ?. What would you , Tazed, suggest to improve the RCMP image in Canada??
considering the blatant lying by the RCMP exposed in the video of the Vancouver tasering, and the massive holes in the RCMP stories of the shootings in Northern BC, how can anyone rationally argue against this bill?
Tazed is not rational. The silent ones are not the majority. Ask ANYONE,in any province, about this and they instantly become quite verbal.
Maybe tazed never watched W5 on Sat. night?
I support officers like Joe Slemko. Again I'll say they all should be like him. He did a good job in this interview.

It would be interesting to get our local MP's position on this bill?

It should be obvious that accountability mechanisms need to be in place, so that the law applies equally to everyone... and unless the conservatives have their own plan it would be interesting to hear why they do not support the bill put forward by Mr. Cullen?

Also it would be great if when Nathan Cullen, or any other MP, puts out a news release relating to a proposed bill if they could also post a web link to the actual bill, so citizens could inform themselves and take more ownership in our democracy?
