Better Use of Tax Dollars

If the Mayor and Council members who made the recent jaunt to St. John’s Newfoundland had taken the money that trip will cost Prince George taxpayers (in the neighborhood of $10 to $12 thousand dollars) and used it for a meeting in this city to showcase the problem we are going through with the Pine Beetle, most residents would have endorsed the expenditure.
To give someone a first hand look at the devastation in the Prince George area, west to the coast, and north to the Pine Pass would have been money well spent. Trying to illustrate the seriousness of the problem to an audience of 3000 some 10,000 kilometers away just isn't going to get the job done. We haven't even been able to illustrate the problem to most people living in the 604!
Oh of course we received some money for the beetle problem, do you remember how much and where it went? I don't. Have these same Councilors and Mayor taken the time to fly over the disaster area in recent weeks to see just how rapidly the problem is growing? Will the organizing of a meeting of the federal, provincial, and other interested groups to try and seek help on the issue fall in the laps of small town Mayors in the area who have already expressed an interest in organizing such a forum? Last week we had no problem in playing in the big leagues. This week let's see if our league is major, or bush!
