Prince George, B.C. - Northern Health may have recorded its first death from H1N1.

At this point, it is suspected  that an adult  patient  who died yesterday  in the Intensive Care Unit of  the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia, Prince George, (formerly PGRH) died of complications brought on by the H1N1 flu.

That has yet to be confirmed by lab results on swabs taken from the patient, and that confirmation is not likely to come until some time next week.

In total,  the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) has confirmed 399 severe H1N1 cases in British Columbia since April 2009, including:
·       Fourteen in Northern Health (one suspected death).
·       One hundred and sixty-six in Fraser Health, including nine deaths.
·       Eighty-six in Interior Health, including three deaths.
·       One hundred and ten in Vancouver Coastal Health, including two deaths.
·       Twenty-three on Vancouver Island, including one death

Of the 399 lab-confirmed cases admitted to hospitals since April,  63 have been admitted to Intensive Care Units throughout the Province. Twelve new cases have been admitted to ICUs in the last week.

Meantime,  Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Perry Kendall says next week, the province will have 64 thousand doses of adjuvanted vaccine, and 25 thousand doses of non- adjuvanted  vaccine.   The focus will be to give the non-adjuvanted vaccine to pregnant women who have not yet received their vaccine.

There has been no change in the schedule for the Northern Health Flu immunization clinics in Prince George for next week, so it would appear there is ample supply of the vaccine. Opinion250 will post any changes to the clinic schedule should the need arise.

Here is the current schedule:

Monday, Nov. 9 - Tuesday, Nov.10, 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

(*Note: No clinic on Wednesday, November 11 for Remembrance Day)

Why would you not take the shot. Would you drive without a seatbelt.
So next week we get 89 000 Doses , in witch part of Vancouver will you use them, or do I read this wrong, by the time you get supply for 3 Mill. in BC it may be all over.
Seatbelts aren't immunosupressive or cause neuron death.
ya the shot is for idiots
I would rather be an alive idiot than a dead brainiac.!
I have a very good immunity. I did not have any colds or flues last winter. I am healthy and happy. I am going to leave it up to my own immunity to look after me. I trust it. As far as me being a threat to others, if you get the shot, why worry. Is that not why you got the shot? To be protected from it? I am not around children or the sick and we love being home. I feel that this is the best decision for me. Everyone has to decide for themselves and their little ones. I am thankful that we get to chose. :}
Don't discount this flu pandemic. It is serious. The World Health Organization are not alarmists. They're very afraid of this one.
What B.C. health is not telling us is how victims die. They die bubbling pink foam. Their lungs and vital organs start to bleed, their lungs fill up with fluid and blood and they die bubbling pink foam.
There was a very good program on MSNBC last Sunday and it was exactly as my Dad described what he saw in 1918 when he was 10 years old. He lost both parents and his 6 year old sister.
Please don't be complacent about this. Consult your doctor. Let him decide you and your family's risk.
as horrifying as your story is, please remember the WHO lives on alarm. oh, and PLEASE do not make any life choices based on MSNBC...
This was a young man, 39 years old. Went to bed feeling fine, woke up in the morning asking to be taken to hospital. In a coma by that evening, passed away late that night.

Please, get your shot. If not for yourself, for others you come in contact with.
Okay, no need to be calling anyone an idiot on this site. We're all adults here (I assume) so let's act accordingly.
My condolences to this young man's family. What a sudden and unexpected tragedy.
I'm concerned with the news this flu really affects people that had no preexisiting susceptibilities or immunodeficiencies. It sounds from the comments above that this was definitely the case with this person from the comments above. A sad story.
Okay how does this compare to the regular flu? Thousands of people of all ages die from non H1N1 flu every year. Be careful with what information you get from the media as they make money from sensationalism and should be held accountable for it.

The world health organization has been yelling pandemic for years and nothing has really happened and now this is their chance. Don't trust them.
From what I have been able to find out this flu is turning out to be milder than the regular seasonal flu.
I bet there has been more deaths from the common flu than H1N1.
You know, this flu shot controversy has been going on for a long time. Some people are comfortable getting it, and some are not.

It is a personal choice, I myself got this H1N1 shot, and I have had the regular flu shot for 9 years now. No problems I will also get the regular shot in December when it comes out.

But if there are people that choose not to get it that is ok. Besides they do not have enough for everyone. So why start a panic. All the shots that will come to B.C. will be given out. So Leave people to make their own choices.

I agree thank goodness we can make our own choice.
More people may die from the common flu than H1N1, but without a cool name like swine flue, it just does not make a good sound bite or headline.

Perhaps it is the fact that the H1N1 targets younger people that makes it touch closer to home with us.

How many people have died from other reasons in Prince George without making the headlines?

The death of anyone is a sad occasion, and my condolences go out to the family.

I have to agree if the WHO didn't cry pandemic, and try to get as much press as they can, sooner or later we would forget to send them millions of dollars a year.
Too bad there wasn't some medical test to be done on people to see if they'd be at risk of the flu shot triggering something devastating in their body before getting the flu shot.
I wonder what the common denominator is in people who react badly to the flu shot?

I'm still torn so probably won't go near the flu shot and try preventative measures instead.

I wish everyone the best of health this season.
As bad as this H1N1 is hyped, nobody has ever reported on the news that 4000-8000 Canadians die every year from the common flu. That's directly from Health Canada's website.

Approx. 36,000 Americans die each year from the common flu... where's the "in-depth" reporting from MCNBC or Fox on that statistic? Not sexy enough I guess.

The H1N1 virus affects the lungs in a big way...we know that.
A word to the wise...most long time smokers have some level of COPD or even Emphysema.
It comes with the territory and to think that smoking hasn't affect your lung capacity, is naive.
Smokers need a shot.
Even those who have quit still need a shot, as many times the damage from long time puffing is not always repairable.
Is it worth the chance not to get one?
Most younger, stronger, healthy people will weather this just fine, but there is no doubt, some are in fact at a greater risk than others.
Actually there have been stories which included the fact that 'regular' flu kills thousands per year. They also include the statement that while regular flu is most deadly to the elderly and otherwise compromised, H1N1 is most deadly to young children, middle aged people and the otherwise compromised.
I can think of few things more rediculous than prating on about whether one should or should not get the shot. It is obviously a personal choice, though the waters get murkey in the case of dependant children. As for there not being enough info about this, or about that, the sad fact is that there is too much information. The average person it would seem does not have the ability to sift throught he information provided to determine which is credible and which is not.
"As bad as this H1N1 is hyped, nobody has ever reported on the news that 4000-8000 Canadians die every year from the common flu. That's directly from Health Canada's website."

Thanks Pylot. It seems no one asks that question, How many people pass away each year from a common flue. On the tube last evening we were told that at least 4000 people die each year from a common flue across Canada. There it is again.

The differnce this year is that the media and the medical profession got it right . They invented a flue and then panicked an entire continent and Galaxo walks away with 400 million in canadian tax dollars.
Cheers
We're all gonna die!!!!!!!
Lots of women die every year from breast cancer, does that mean that men shouldn't worry about prostate cancer?

Just because the regular flu and H1N1 both have "flu" in their name (just like various types of cancer), doesn't mean that they impact or target the same group of people. They are different strains and they have different characteristics that make them more dangerous for different groups.

Do the research, find out if you fit into one of the high risk groups and make an informed decision as to whether you think the shot is a good idea for you.
I took Pilolts advice and checked Health Canada website and read it and weep.

Planners have projected the impact of a new flu pandemic at infection rates resembling the moderate infection rate of the Asian and Hong Kong pandemics at the lower end and the Spanish pandemic at the higher end. While in a normal flu season 5 to 25% of people become ill, that rate is expected to increase to between 15 to 35% in a moderate or severe pandemic. Within the population at large, the highest rates of infection occur among children (40% vs. 20% for adults), but the highest rates of complications and death occur among the elderly and those with chronic health conditions, especially chronic respiratory conditions. Using these models it is expected that between 4.5 and 10.6 million Canadians would become ill as defined as being unable to work or engage in normal activities for a minimum half day period. Of those who fall ill, it is expected that slightly more than half will require no formal medical care beyond supportive care and recuperation at home. Slightly less than half will require some form of outpatient health care. About 1% would require hospitalization, that percentage translating to between 46,000 and 138,000 people in Canada requiring hospital beds over a six to eight week period. Between 0.4 and 0.5% would die, translating to between 17,000 and 58,000 across Canada. In a normal flu season, between 4,000 and 8,000 Canadians will die from the flu, primarily the elderly and the respiratory compromised.
Cheers
I never get the flu, but I'm getting the shot. I don't want to accidentally pass this off to someone's grandmother or infant.
