Marchers heading to MLA Shirley Bond's constituency office
Prince George, B.C.- Shouting “Kill Bill….21” members of CUPE marched from the Days Inn two blocks to the 5th Avenue constituency office of Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Shirley Bond.
At issue is the legislation which forced an end to the ambulance workers 7 month strike. Yesterday the provincial government announced an industrial inquiry commission had been struck to examine many of the issues of concern with the bargaining process for ambulance workers.
Some of the concerns to be addressed were suggested by the union, however, the government says it has been advised CUPE doesn’t plan to take part in the Commission’s probe into the issues.
The Industrial Inquiry Commission is to present its final report on or before January 15th of 2010.
That report is to provide the Province with options for a colllective bargaining structure that support the efficient and effective delivery of ambulance services through different service delivery and operational models. The report is non binding.
The Industrial Inquiry Commission will also investigate and prepare options regarding the following issues:
· Staff recruitment, training, and retention;
· Staff workload and occupational health and safety issues;
· Deployment strategies in comparison with other Canadian ambulance service delivery models;
· The models and rates of total compensation for ambulance paramedics and dispatchers applied by other jurisdictions in Canada based on:
(a) wages;
(b) premiums for hours worked and hours on-call in rural and remote areas;
(c) benefits, including health and welfare benefits and pension plan; and
Any other related matter referred to the Industrial Inquiry Commission by mutual agreement of the parties.
