Getting the Big Picture on The Exhibition Grounds

There is now a 'vision' in place for Exhibition Park...

Prince George City Council has approved a Final Master Plan for the 60-hectare site located south of 15th avenue and west of Ospika Boulevard.  Some of the major facilities in the park include the CN Centre, Kin arenas, Aquatic Centre, Ice Oval and Soccer facilites.

A revised plan for the park actually started back in 2002, when it was thought that some of the user groups might be re-located to the site from Recreation Place.  The park wasn't used for that purpose and the plan was shelved until this year.  Following consultations with user groups and an open house this past spring, a consultant finalized a long-term vision.

The City's Parks and Open Space Planner, Laurie-Ann Kosec says, "A master plan for Exhibition Park is sorely needed, as it is a 'park' that is lacking the design and character typical of a park-like setting."  She says, "Overall, the park has been described as being relatively unattractive with no sense of park entry, is dominated by paved areas, and contains considerable vehicular and pedestrian network issues to resolve."

The Master Plan's main objectives are:
-- to improve the attractiveness and character of the park
-- meet the needs and interests of diverse users of the park
-- improve both the vehicular and pedestrian networks

The City's Manager of Long Range Planning, Grant Bains, told Councillors at last night's meeting the plan will take time to bring to fruition.  "I would suggest it's in the neighbourhood of 20 to 25 years in terms of implementation, there's a fair amount of capital works required to fully implement the plan."

Bains pointed out approving the plan in no way committed council to spending any funds, as each project carried out under the plan would come back for approval.  The first step is to acquire 8.4-hectares of crown land to the west of the park...so far, no price tag is available.

oh goodie, another 8 acres of soccer fields that only the special can use.
Okay, if I am reading this correctly .... we have one staff telling us tht the "park" is essentially not a park at all ... that it is butt-ugly .....

then we have another staff member telling us that it will take 20 to 25 years to complete......

sort of like the amount of time it took to take that wooden corner sign down and get a proper electronic sign up .... I think that took 10 years from the time the Multiplex was built ..

So same olde same olde .... the City picks and chooses .... Torino, yes .... exhibition park, no ...
>So same olde same olde .... the City picks and chooses .... Torino, yes .... exhibition park, no ...<

News this morning: The Torino (Turin) Organizing Committee is going to file for bankruptcy. It needs another 60 million Euro immediately, but the Italian government has failed to come across with more money. The games will go ahead, but it looks very grim financially.

Are the Italians going to be receptive to foreign visitors' concerns?
kb: >"the "mission" isn't about Italy"<

Yes, I know what you are saying. Torino and the 2010 Whistler Olympics do have something in common: Going over budget! The news about Torino also stated that contractors and suppliers won't have a merry christmas when they know for sure they won't get paid! Already our papers are reporting that some 2010 venues are going to be way over budget and that both the federal and the provincial governments will have to kick in extra money, just like it is happening in Italy.

Construction costs in BC have gone through the roof, and it is only 2005.

Being 800 km from Whistler is not exactly the same as hopping across from Seattle or Bellingham, in my humble opinion.
In regards to the park. the biggest travesty of the park is University Way. Don't get me wrong I like the road to the university, but when it was built they had no regard for the park below.

I feel sorry for those who house their horses in the park. It used to be back in the days of 100 steps ski hill that the people with horses at exibition park could access all the backwoods of Cranbrook Hill via 100 steps. That was why the exibition grounds had horse stables. When the University Way was built the cut off all access to Cranbrook Hill with no regard for the aquestrian community located at the exibition grounds.

I would like to see that link re-established between the exibition grounds and Cranbrook hill for the aquestrian community as well as other trail users like mountain bikers and hikers.

As for the Olympics and who will benefit. One only has to look at the Cascadia cooridor from Portland to Seattle to see who is getting the free ride and will benefit the most from the 2010 Olympics. Their efforts are going into cornering the tourist market for 2010 and it will defenitely be at our expense up here 800km away.
Escalating costs ....

Today there were reports that the construction tender for the new UBC outdoor pool which had been planned for the 2006 Pan Pacific swim Championships has come in far too high as a resulot of the building frenzie in teh lower mainland cause by 2010 projects .....

the meet will likely be held in Central Canada ....

I wonder if anyone is keeping a tally on both sides of the "benefit" ledger?
