Prince George, B.C.-The battle over the introduction of the HST in B.C. is not over. Speaking on the Meisner program on 93.1 CFIS FM this morning, former B.C. Premier Bill Vanderzalm says the troops continue to rally.
“We have asked for a free vote in Parliament as there are a number of M.P.s who have said they don’t support the HST, and we plan to ask the Premier (of B.C.) for the same.”
Vanderzalm has joined forces with the provincial New Democrats in the fight against the harmonization of the federal goods and services tax with the provincial sales tax. He says the new 12% rate will cause undo stress for low income families, the hospitality industry and tourism. He is also very concerned about the implications of handing a provincial taxation system over to the federal government.
The HST is to take effect in July of next year. Before then, Vanderzalm says there will be a request to Elections B.C. early in the New Year to pave the way for the collection of petitions in every constituency in the province opposing the harmonization of the tax.
While he has speaking engagements over the next couple of weeks ( including a debate with Minister of Finance Colin Hansen) he says the real battle will begin after the Olympics. “We don’t want to use all our ammunition right now, because we want to make sure we have some in the spring after the Olympics when people aren’t distracted.”
