Too Late For Underprivileged to Get Special Olympic Tickets?

Prince George, B.C.- The Olympics have struck a chord with School District 57 Trustee Sharyl Warrington who is a member of the Olympic Spirit Committee.
Last Spring it was announced there would be 50 thousand tickets available for  under privileged families, but Trustee Warrington says   it has been very difficult to find out   how those tickets would be distributed. “After much work and many phone calls, I   finally  received information last week   and unfortunately,   its so late to try and put something together, we will still attempt to put  something together, but the feasibility of putting something together that involves transportation, accommodation and selection of candidates is a huge undertaking in a small   length of time.”
She says she will attempt to put together something by mid December, but doubts anything   concrete can be developed in time to distribute tickets.  “These tickets were largely designed for the lower mainland. They were not designed to reach the northern extent of our Province and that is so unfortunate. The north has really not benefited   from the Olympic legacy and so as one of our members (of the Spirit Committee) said today it’s like a slap in the face, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t proceed.” She says the Spirit Committee will  try to make the tickets available to underprivileged people.

Gordo's friends got theirs. Why care about anyone else? If nothing else the man is consistant.
Dear Trustee Sharyl Warrington, member of Olympic Spirit Committee et al:

I empathize with your frustration. However, now that you have your information, it really isn't rocket science. Hold a half hour brainstorming session if you have not done so already. Spend another hour or so choosing the direction. Implement your plan.

I really don't see how it can be all that difficult to make your choices. Keep it simple.

I wish you the best in your efforts!

Sincerely,
commoner

PS. I am available to help but I am sure your team is well qualified.

Go public ..... Vanoc cannot afford negative pr.
I agree gus!
They need to take this public and make some noise!
I saw a chart the other night on the percentage of tickets and seatiing that was actually made available to the general public and in reality, the public got screwed!
The Olympics are indeed a huge political and corporate bash!
I also agree that the north has recieved nothing in return for their tax dollars, but that comes as no suprise.
Vanoc and the B.C. government should be embarrassed by the mess they have made, but obviously, they are not.
Our small community is having the torch come thru it. The local commounity assocation was given a grant to help support the torch when it came. All the children from the school will be out. It could be really cold out. It was brought forward to buy the school kids olympic mitts. It would have cost around $800.00. No problem sounds like a great idea. Nope we, we cannot do it. We have to spent the money on signs announcing the torch relay comming. ?? Because the money was from the goverment we cannot spent it on anything olympic. Give your head a shake.
I'm quite sure that Vanoc is counting on nobody using the tickets and in turn will be scooped up by the people of the lower mainland.

How on earth is somebody who is underprivileged going to be able to afford travel and accommodation, especially with the airlines and hotels nearly tripling their rates? Even if if it's 100% subsidized it's a very large price tag for what it's worth, as it takes larger amounts of money to send these folks down there.

I'm quite sure Bond and Bell will enjoy their box seats, paid for by you and me.
You just have to listen to the media from the lower mainland or east of hope. When talking the province they are talking surrey, abbotsford, oh and ya.. Vancouver/whistler.
Good point Pylot Project...well said!
Andyfreeze, I disagree with your comment that the North has received nothing, what about the bill for all this world class posturing? I think one could say that we received the bill, and it is a bill that will keep on coming, like a businessmans' dream, a perpetual invoice that is guaranteed to be paid.
metalman.
Have I got this right? The 'public' by and large (if you read the comments on this board) are against the Olympics and they're also complaining that they don't have adequate access to tickets?
MrPG: I didn't agree with the olympics, but by god, if I'm going to get stuck with a multi BILLION dollar price ticket, yeah I'm going to complain about not getting any benefit at all from it, espcially if tickets were promised to a certain group and then the promise reneged on.
I dont think there is much support for the olympics from northern BC. We have a lot less reason to get excited.
I DO have a suggestion though: How about you give the tickets to school teams or classes? There could be funding for travel as well but accomodations might be supplemented by billeting. At any rate, you could accomodate a whole lot of people for a cheap price. Granted, there would be no distinction between 'underpriviledged' and regular folk but in the end isnt the goal to make seats available to people who otherwise would never go?
rich people playing with public money for private entertainment.
And yet again Loki hits it right on the button! More tax payer money transferring into the hands of the rich! It will continue along with more taxes and less rights. Get used to it sheeples! Just wait until the grand total is finally released on exactly what this party for the elite will be. All of you "This is great for BC" will be standing like deer caught in headlights. Maybe your beloved government will spare you the shock by hiding the true costs. I will support the athletes who have worked long and hard for this moment but NEVER support the spending spree that preceded it.
Loki gets the prize!
Well said.
This is what happens when governments scoop up tax payers dollars to build venues for big corporations to make money with!
Define underprivileged. Be specific. Are all people on social assistance underprivileged? What about the homeless? What about single moms? Food bank customers too? Free Olympic tickets to them all? Or some? EVERY homeless person or social assisted adults and kids get tickets to the Olympics? Just so many free tickets for each town, city or municipality? Who decides? If they don't want to go can they resell said tickets and somehow better their life? Albeit briefly? What about middle class families who still have a job and have an overtaxed income but still can't afford to go? Too many questions.
Geez Harbinger, what are you trying to do, make sense? After all, this was a BRIBE. It was intended to portray the olympics as being for everyone, not just the rich. We bought it, (or at least some folks did) and now it doesnt really matter what happens to it. How exactly they will divvy it up and not piss people off IS a problem. One i wouldnt like to have to solve.
I heard on the news today that the people of Whistler have seats set aside for them that go on sale this weekend. Only people of Whistler get to buy these tickets though, and yet they are tickets for all events even events in Vancouver and Richmond that are no where near Whistler.

What is up with that I wonder... its like the government is favoring the people of Whistler because they paid for the event? This is just a slap in the face to the tax payers of BC everywhere that won't have the same access to tickets based purely on where they live....
