City Council has nixed a request for free transit on Federal Election day.

The cost of a full free day for all riders on election day would be about $12,000.00 in lost revenue.

The request came from the College of New Caledonia Students Association.

Fearing inclement wather could deter some people from heading to the polls on federal election day (January 23rd), the Association called on Council to make Public Transit free on that day.

The Students Association say the gesture could accomplish three things
-encourage the community to get out and vote
-encourage the use of envionmentally  friendly transportation
-would be viewed as an effort to reach out to students at UNBC and CNC who live on campus and have no vehicle

Councilor Don Zurowski said he didn't agree that the City should spend $12,000.00 to encourage something the Federal Government should look after, and that is namely making certain there were polling stations at CNC and the University.

Mayor Kinsley  noted if he were a federal candidate, he would ensure voters had a ride, he would as a candidate provide private bus service to voters.  He advised that if the Students Association contacted the respetive candidates, they would be more than happy to ensure  the students could get to the polling stations.

The only free rides given by this city hall go to Kinsley and company.
Known as trips abroad to acquire knowledge on whatever.
The taxpayers do not even expect to get their dollars worth anymore, and they appear to approve of the mayor's jaunts, so we should all just wish him a joyous 2006 with many journeys on his agenda.
Better not go to some of those countries fighting that "bird" flu, or his flying "high" days could come to an abrupt halt.
If he does go there, I suggest he take more friends from city hall, and we should not raise any objections!!!
