Garbage and Water Rates Up For Possible Boost

Prince George, B.C.- City Council will be asked to consider raising garbage sewer and water rates again when it meets this evening for its regular scheduled session. The Finance and Audit committee will present several options to make the services “self sufficient”.
Canfor Pulp Limited Partnership (CPLP) will be making a presentation to Prince George City Council this evening, asking for a letter of support to speed up the approval of their green transformation projects.
The company is in line for $122 million dollars in black liquor credit dollars from the federal government, all of which is to be spent on the three mills in Prince George. CPLP says the projects can create energy and reduce odour.
Also on the agenda this evening, a request that council pass a resolution calling on the Federal government to make “every effort to reach an international agreement on climate change”. The resolution comes as the Federal government is heading into the climate change talks in Copenhagen.
Council will be asked to give L&M Engineering the nod for the engineering contract for Boundary Road. While the company’s bid was not the lowest, L&M scored a higher total of points through the evaluation process. The L&M bid was for $1.5 million, that was $300 thousand more than the lowest bid which came from Associated Engineering.
Tourism Prince George will present its business plan and budget for the coming year when the hotel room tax is implemented. It is expected that tax will generate nearly half a million dollars in its first year. The City’s contribution of $367 thousand will continue, and the budget calls for a total of $863 thousand in expenses, of which $361 thousand would be spent on wages and consultant fees.
Council will get an update on the capital and enhancement projects that have been complete in 2009. The projects include road rehabilitation and paving enhancement.
