Prince George- The province has announced grants in lieu of property taxes for the Regional districts whose borders fall within the confines of the lakes established when the Kenny Dam was built by Alcan Aluminum.

The Regional district of Kitimat –Stikine will receive $421,268 dollars, while the Regional district of Bulkley-Nechako receives $631,901.

Under the terms of the Provinces long standing agreement with Alcan, the Kemano Hydroelectric generating facility and the lakes that it formed are exempt from paying property taxes.

The grants, the province says,  is a way of recognizing that the two Regional districts,  should receive some revenues, in a manner which is similar to facilities owned by BC Hydro.

The agreement is based on a 15 year memorandum of understanding between the Province and the two Regional districts.

Government of the day sure gave Alcan a gift...No prop. taxes for the last 50+ years. Smart, those old Alcan boys. Alcan shouldn't have a say what takes place in and on the resevoir, since they don't pay taxes. Wishfull thinking..... That won't happen.
Students in BC pay more to government in tuition, than all corporations pay in corporate income taxes in this province. Think about that when you start paying HST on everything.

The Alcan deal was economic treason on the people of BC and that the government of the day continues to give away our water rights to them is a travesty of sovereignty IMO.
