With   lights flashing,   the police  vehicles are ready to hit the road, and some of the officers taking part in the four day blitz pose in  front of their vehicles
Prince George, B.C.- If you plan on being on the roads in and around Prince George tonight through Saturday, expect to be pulled over.
In addition to the regular   Drinking Driving Counter Attack Roadside checks, there is a concerted effort involving 31 RCMP officers, Conservation officers,   and   members of the   Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement unit.   They are determined to stop   every vehicle on the roads  through the next four nights.
“I would hope we won’t find anyone who has been drinking and driving” says Inspector Eric Brewer  “But we are determined to  reduce the rate of fatal crashes that come as a result of alcohol or drug use among drivers.”
Officers from Burns Lake, Vanderhoof, Valemount, and Quesnel    are teaming up with Prince George ,   North District, and the Prince George Integrated Road Safety Unit in this crackdown.
A recent similar crackdown in Ft. St. John resulted in 88   impaired drivers being taken off the road.
In an average year,  there will be 110 crashes in prince George in which alcohol or drugs were a factor. Of those crashes, there   will be 74 people injured and two killed.   The cost in ICBC claims   will be $140 million dollars.
More importantly, Sergeant Pat McTiernan says no family should have to feel the pain “No officer wants to have to go to a home and knock on the door to deliver the bad news about someone in their family.”
Inspector Eric Brewer says the RCMP want you yo enjoy the holidays, but to do so responsibly, “Plan to   have a designated driver, or call a cab, or take public transit or call Operation Red Nose. Make sure you get home safely.”

lock em up...
confiscate their vehicles...
and how about a charge of
driving with intent to maim, injure or kill another person?
With all the inexpensive ways to get yourself, your friends and your vehicle home safely...
there is NO EXCUSE to drive impaired...
absolutely NONE!!!!!!!!!
Nice picture. As long as Monty isn't there.
It would be a real nice thing to have no one charged in this blitz. Campbell would have to find another income scam. It's the same as smoking - - all the stupid laws regarding second-hand smoke. If every smoker in BC quit That would bankrupt the provincial coffers. I can't understand why they haven't legalised pot yet - - a huge cash inflow.
I am surprised.... that there is not a Tim Horton sign in the background.
It's an official thread everyone. We have mention of a Tim Hortons relating to the RCMP and somebody blaming Gordon Campbell for something. Congrats!
Seen them with all there lights on, there must of been 40 vehicles. One of the best Christmas light shows of seen.
Well Mr PG everone knows You support Campbell.
Who is Monty?
No, I'm not a Campbell fan. I just don't blame him for everything, unlike most of the people on here.
I have to wonder if a blitz like this would be more productive if it wasn't announced? I have to wonder how many habitual drunk drivers the cops will miss because of this advance warning? It's like warning people of speed traps; chances are, they'll slow down before they get there.

faxman: that is the plan. The RCMP actually prefer not to charge anyone. To begin with, if they don't catch any drunk drivers, they consider the campaign a success.

If they do catch a drunk driver, they are stuck doing about 4 hours of paper work plus possible court time. That explains why there are so many road side suspensions rather than full charges.

If only public transit were adequate. it does not run when the drunks are cast out of the closing bars, drunks on a bus are often removed if they are even allowed on in the first place, and bus stops are blocks away from one's door.

Taxis: too expensive! It cost me $20 to go from pine center to parkhill center. What a burn that was. It costs $10 just turning on the meter.

Walk home: from the bowl to college heights or the hart, while drunk? If one does not get arrested for being intoxicated in a public place, and does not pass out along the way during one of the many "rest breaks", it would take till morning just to get in the door.

The spouse gets a little owlie being called for a pickup at closing time.

Friends: they are just as drunk as me.

Any other suggestions to participate in the season of cheer(s) and festivities and still get home?
If you can afford to drink to the point of intoxication, in a bar where the prices are not cheap, then you can afford to take a taxi home. If you can't, then you shouldn't be drinking. 20 bucks is what... maybe 2 or 3 drinks? Those are probably those drinks that you would just regret in the morning anyway, so why not put that $20 to better use?

In theory, those who are drinking are adults and as adults we can plan ahead and make sure we have a safe mode of transportation to get home without resorting to driving drunk.

I would (and have) pick up my spouse no matter what time, no matter where. I would just be happy they weren't an idiot and attempted driving. My spouse would do the same for me, in a heartbeat.

Nice theory. Now think about it for minute. Most anyone going out to get intoxicated to any degree is not being a mature adult in the first place. Anyone that does it a regular basis, is not a responsible adult anyway.

That is not the same as a glass of beer or wine with dinner. Yet, the teetotaler is cast in the same light as the raging drunk when it comes to driving. The only time it is differentiated is at the counter attack road stop where the officer on hand makes an ad hoc decision based on perception, attitude, mood, and willingness to do paperwork.
Loki, it did not cost you $10.00 to get into a cab. The flag is $3.10, so lets get real here! If it cost you $20.00 to get to Parkhill Center from Pine Center, then yes, it was a burn! You should have taken down the cab number, time, and date, and phoned in a complaint. I really wish I could make that kind of money legally driving cab!
Bunch of heavy handed BS.
Amazing how people complain about this but I would wager that they would be the first ones screaming about there not being police officer around taking drunk drivers off the road should a drunk driver hit them or their family injuring them or worse...
mind you if peopel were smart, (and most are but there are those who think the law is for everyone but them), they wouldn't drive drunk and this road blitz wouldn't be needed....
I am glad they are out there, I just wish the judicial system would get harsher in their sentencing...
