Good to see!
Good to see these people being taken off the road, albeit temporarily, hopefully it makes them think twice before driving under the influence again.

The real scary statistic about this is that it is was not the weekend, and they had done everything but drop leaflets from helicopters, telling people that they had brought in officers from other detachments, and would be out in force.

Pretty expensive night for 9 impaired charges.

Is this the price we want to pay?
I guess I won't be taking my staff for a couple after work or my wife to dinner tomorrow. Thanks a lot.
And spare me any taxi/red nose bs. It makes the whole experience too convoluted & costly. If I am under .08 I am not impaired, legally or otherwise. Why should I be suspended & my car towed just because I enjoy a glass or two of wine with dinner?
Loki, EBSL, yeah it may seem extreme, but would you feel it was too much cost if your wife of kids were killed by one of the 9 people, OR even one of the 23 who got 24hr suspension.
Even .08 is hardly enough to make anyone a greater threat than you typical lousy driver.

Drunk = you are punished
Not Drunk = you are punished

It is heavy handed & plain wrong.
sorry eatsbushes but red nose is free or by donation...if you can't afford that then a good idea not to drink isn't it?
No the impaired driving law it isn't perfect but today what is?

and loki, the price compaired to having someone we love killed is a pretty inexpensive cost don't you thing
Just to be clear:

The police have a 'zero tolerance' policy right now. That means a whiff of alcohol & you're automatically given a 24 hour suspension & your car is towed.
In other words:
A sip of wine + stopped in check stop = vehicle towed.
Anyone who thinks that is reasonable needs to have their head examined.

I'm done.
oh boy, the legislation says .08, the yellow stripe boys say zero tolerance.
So the enforcement arm now determines law?
Amazing how people can find anything to complain about! If there was no counter attack right now they would be complaining about that!
I like it. Anyone who drinks and drives is an idiot, pure and simple.
I agree Mercenary, what is $20 to be safe and still allow yourself to go out and enjoy the night. You shouldn't be drinking if you can't afford a responsible way home....if you want to get liquored, go to the store and drink at home with your wife busheater. Loki....well I have no comment for you.
You idiots!
I have no problem with the checkstops or arresting impaired drivers. I have a HUGE issue with 'zero tolerance'!
No one said anything about getting "liquored".
Round trip cab fare from my home & plenty of other peoples to downtown is approximatly $70.00 & I would think the Red Nose people would & should expect at least the same. (Unless you're a cheap, redneck idiot).

It's not about the money anyway. It's absolutely wrong that anyone should be treated like a criminal inspite of having commited no crime.
Bah! If you need to drink to have a good time then there is something wrong with you. There is a time and place to have a few wobbly pops and its not when you have to drive yourself home.

IMO there should absolutely be a zero tolerance policy on drinking and driving.
You're right. Let's fine everybody for everything illegal or not. And let's close all licenced restaurants & bars. In fact let's just have random road blocks all the time for seatbelts, drinking, cell phones, smoking with your kids in the car, worn tires, forgot your licence at home etc. etc. Zero tolerance. Car impounded.
What a great world it will be.
Hope I die before I get senile.
I watch them look people in the eye and ask them if they have had any drinks, then walk around back and take a look in a perfectly law abiding persons trunk, which seems wholly unreasonable to me, but meanwhile not even a glance at the tires to see if they are winter tires, or the wipers to see if they are sufficient for winter conditions.

I think a few equipment safety warnings would go a lot further to road safety, than the intimidation of 'potential' drunks.

Also most people don't know this but a 24-hour is worse than an impaired charge if you are not over .08. A 24-hour can not be fought in the courts and can not be removed from your license once issued... and is solely at the discretion of the police officers view of your condition with no requirements for a breathalyser (wide open for discrimination abuse (ie you know your a redkneck when?)). An impaired charge however gets its day in court.
