Prince George, B.C.- The City of Prince George has made it to the top ten finalists to win the title of GamesTown 2010 and the $100,000 grand prize.

The other nine on the list are: Houston, Princeton, Smithers, Quesnel, Salmon Arm, Dawson Creek, Kamloops, Kelowna and Coquitlam.

From Nov. 1 until Jan. 4, British Columbians voted for their favourite communities online, allowing the public to choose the top 10. Two communities from each from the five different population categories make up the final 10.

A panel of GamesTown 2010 celebrity judges will now choose the three winning communities. The top three will be announced later this month.

The gold, silver and bronze medal winning communities will receive cash awards of $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000, respectively, to put toward upgrading a local sport or healthy living facility. Winning communities will also receive 2010 Olympic and Paralympic tickets.

While on the surface this is a good news story, one has to wonder, that if we should win, the tickets are awarded with less than two weeks to the games starting. Who can drop everything, find a hotel in Vancouver and travel to Vancouver on that short of a notice ? Most people are having troubles living paycheque to paycheque little alone able to just head off to Vancouver on a moments notice.
Wow!!!! 10 tickets for the gold communities. Events to be determined by the province.
Here we go again..... spend spend spend
This could have been a good news story; had more people been informed earlier, say in November when the voting started, perhaps more in PG could have actually voted!

I fear that if we actually win something, the money will be used to study an upgrade to a sport facility rather than an actual upgrade. Or will it go towards a name change?
The whole idea is to keep it moving ..... create something, earn credits for thecreation if someone wants it .... then get someone else's creation or service.....

stop it, and we all can give up ....
if you overspend .... well .... you'll just have to overcreate for a while and hope someone will take those creations off your hands eventually.
