Campbell Premier In Next Provincial Election- Never

By Ben Meisner

There is a growing feeling in the province by those who cover provincial politics that Premier Gordon Campbell will not be the leader of the party going into the next provincial election.

Paul Wilcox, of The Victoria Times Colonist goes so far as to say,” absolutely no way Campbell will run again”. You never can say never, but given the next few scenarios it is safe to say Wilcox’s prediction is on solid ground.

The Olympics will be a grand hoorah for the Premier. The budget is coming in March and expect it to be a cost cutting one in which a large number of jobs will be cut, costs in most departments will be cut, and the province will be digging under every stone to find some money to pay for the 2010 bills and in particular the cost overruns for the security.

Now marry that up with the introduction of the HST and you have grounds for a divorce, but there is more.

The Premier already finds himself facing a voting public that is not happy in the election pitch that the deficit will be no larger than,”495,000,000”, and not a squeak about the introduction of the HST even though the Federal Government was talking about it in March, long before the provincial election.

But there is more, if and you must ,”if” the Basi- Virk trial gets under way , expect a lot of old dirty laundry to make its way to the surface. The sale of BC Rail is like an old dog stretched out on the floor, you just never know when, or  if he will bite you.

So unless the economy shows signs like it has just won the Lotto 649, unless the 2010 is such a success that all of the people of the province forget about the bill they have just received, and unless somehow the Premier is able to convince the public that the HST is going to lead us all out of the economic problems that we have, Wilcox is on the money

Tomorrow a look at who the possible successors might  be.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

The successor would be the leader of a free enterprise party that represented the middle working class... if we had such a viable party in BC.
IMHO
Happy New Year, Bill ... now, about that old dog:

But there is more, if and you must ,”if” the Basi- Virk trial gets under way , expect a lot of old dirty laundry to make its way to the surface. The sale of BC Rail is like an old dog stretched out on the floor, you just never know when, or if he will bite you.

I have confidence in old dogs, especially those who are notorious for their ability to create methane gas. When he farts, look out ... and BC Rail isn't an old dead dog yet.

Only yesterday, on my blog, I posted part of Judge Parrett's 1998 "Reasons for Judgment" in the Carrier Lumber case. Many informative similarities to the way "government" appears to be handling itself in the BC Rail Case.

There is no doubt the B.C. Rail case will continue to dominate the news....once it get's going again.
There is also no doubt that careful manipulation by the Campbell government has delayed the trial for what appears to be dubious reasons.
The truth WILL come out,and I have a feeling that it will be devastating to not only the B.C. Liberals, but in particular, to Gordon Campbell and his inner circle of privilaged friends.
The real mystery here is why mainstream media has allowed it to go realitively untouched when they know there is a huge story there?
Who put the pressure on them to leave it alone?
As well, the NDP has also ignored the B.C. Rail issue for the most part when logic says they should be all over it.
Why?
I believe the criminal Campbell has sucked all out of this province that he can. Through legal loopholes of course. Has he lied, well, lets say he hasn't told the whole truth, or the entire stroy...only that information that will help him reach his desired end.
Let's hope he doesn't run again!
Go Non-partisan party!
I don't know who the successor will be if there is one, but the phrase "Premier Carole James" certainly sends a shiver down my spine. And not in a good way.
I agree with MrPG, The best platform that the liberals have right now is Carol James, she just is not electable as Premier no matter what Gordon Campbell does. For the NDP to have a chance of turfing this liberal government, they first need to replace their own leader.

As to a successor...Premier Carol Taylor sounds rather nice.
As long as the NDP continues to carry Carole James around as party leader, they will never get a vote from me!
(I have never voted NDP and still not sure if I ever would?)
They probably think they have lot's of time to decide what their new game plan will be,but they are dead wrong on that.
The only hope they have is to turf Carole and find a new leader that people might just support, but that will only be if they also give the voters time to study the new leader for while before the next election.
They also need to be more aggressive in their critisism of the Campbell government, something that Carole James is really missing the boat on!
I don't need to hear from her lackies,I need to hear from her,as painful as it is!
Carole Taylor as Premier?
No way...she is a Liberal/Campbell clone in a skirt and another corporate butt-kisser!
Ever notice the Liberals just keep recycling their inner circle and never let anyone new into the fold?
What are they afraid off?
If Taylor really had any credibility, she would have had a lot more to say when she resigned.
Her silence says a lot.
"They also need to be more aggressive in their critisism of the Campbell government, something that Carole James is really missing the boat on!"

Are you kidding? This is all Carole James and the NDP do. If anything, they need to take fewer potshots at Gordon Campbell and tell the people what they would do differently. They won't be taken seriously until they do.
Andyfreeze....Carol Taylor's resignation says a lot about her, at least she stood up to Gordon Campbell, and we know about her stand on the HST.

She was smart in not saying a lot when she resigned, after all, why burn all your bridges.
we fo need a viable third party, one that stands for common sense and the average person. there are good people around who would be great in government - it's the politics they can't stand! how do we get them interested? take the bs out of the equation!
