Just noticed...aren't they drawing the show home a little late this year!
What's with the traffic lights at our newly renovated (at the cost of 9 million dollars), intersection at Domano and Highway 16. These traffic lights are a flippen joke. Does nobody have the expertise in this City to set up traffic lights correctly. Talk about polution, waiting in the middle of the night for this intersection's lights to go through the full cycle before it turns green for the said waiting vehicle. Pathetic!!!

And then there is the lights at 15th and Ospika. That one hasn't worked properly since they put the left turn signal light in about a year and a half ago.

The traffic light by the old scales, just south of the new bridge, not working properly.

The light at 5th and Ospika, has been out of wack for about a week and a half now.

Who is the contractor that looks after these lights? Maybe they would like to pay our extra fuel costs while we are sitting waiting for the light to change in the middle of the night. Whoever this contractor is, they should be canned immediately! they are incompetant! Enough is enough.

Once again, we get the start of some great projects, but we just can't seem to make it to the FINISH line.
Show home was drawn in February last year. I belive it's the same this year.
And speaking of traffic lights, how about the new four laner past the south scale, that light goes green coming out of the old scale to stop traffic along Hwy 97 for no reason at all. You sit and wait for nothing.
Then there's the Bypass
Wow... another recent air quality advisory issued. Thankfully it didn't last long.

I didn't smell wood smoke in the air though even though it was listed as a contributor to the advisory. And I sure didn't see very many wood stoves burning around town.

Aren't the majority of us using natural gas now? If so then how can wood stoves still contribute to our poor air quality advisories?

If they're going to include them as a contributor then they might as well count my toaster in as well cause I burnt some toast on Tuesday. (Sorry about the emissions guys.)

I agree with the above posts concerning the traffic lights that do not activate at times when traffic volumes are low.

But the only thing I can think of is too call City Hall and give them the location and info.
As for the new lights and the lights south of the scale, both of those are Provincial matters - highways.
I think the people that pushed for the new cell phone law and the people who are pushing for no idling should have a cage match. :-)
I received this from a friend.

WHY ISN'T THIS ON THE FRONT PAGE AND THE LEAD STORY ON EVERY NEWS AGENCY?

Costco -- Read this whole article - especially the end - kudos for Costco!

COSTCO! read this...

Let's hear it for Costco!! (This is just mind-boggling!) Make sure you read all the way past the list of the drugs. The woman that signed below is a Budget Analyst out of federal Washington , DC offices.

Did you ever wonder how much it costs a drug company for the active ingredient in prescription medications? Some people think it must cost a lot, since many drugs sell for more than $2.00 per tablet. We did a search of offshore chemical synthesizers that supply the active ingredients found in drugs approved by the FDA. As we have revealed in past issues of Life Extension, a significant percentage of drugs sold in the United States contain active ingredients made in other countries. In our independent investigation of how much profit drug companies really make, we obtained the actual price of active ingredients used in some of the most popular drugs sold in America

The data below speaks for itself.

Since the cost of prescription drugs is so outrageous, I thought everyone should know about this. Please read the following and pass it on. It pays to shop around. This helps to solve the mystery as to why they can afford to put a Walgreen's on every corner. On Monday night, Steve Wilson, an investigative reporter for Channel 7 News in Detroit , did a story on generic drug price gouging by pharmacies. He found in his investigation, that some of these generic drugs were marked up as much as 3,000% or more. Yes, that's not a typo.....three thousand percent! So often, we blame the drug companies for the high cost of drugs, and usually rightfully so. But in this case, the fault clearly lies with the pharmacies themselves. For example, if you had to buy a prescription drug, and bought the name brand, you might pay $100 for 100 pills. The pharmacist might tell you that if you get the generic equivalent, they would only cost $80, making you think you are 'saving' $20. What the pharmacist is not telling you is that those 100 generic pills may have only cost him $10!

At the end of the report, one of the anchors asked Mr. Wilson whether or not there were any pharmacies that did not adhere to this practice, and he said that Costco consistently charged little over their cost for the generic drugs.

I went to the Costco site , where you can look up any drug, and get its online price. It says that the in-store prices are consistent with the online prices. I was appalled. Just to give you one example from my own experience, I had to use the drug, Compazine, which helps prevent nausea in chemo patients.

I used the generic equivalent, which cost $54.99 for 60 pills at CVS. I checked the price at Costco, and I could have bought 100 pills for $19.89. For 145 of my pain pills, I paid $72.57. I could have got 150 at Costco for $28.08.

I would like to mention, that although Costco is a 'membership' type store, you do NOT have to be a member to buy prescriptions there, as it is a federally regulated substance.. You just tell them at the door that you wish to use the pharmacy, and they will let you in. (this is true)

I went there this past Thursday and asked them. I am asking each of you to please help me by copying this letter, and passing it into your own e-mail, and send it to everyone you know with an e-mail address.

This can be verified by clicking on the following link:

Keep On Smiling
I want to give a thumbs up to the city as they seem to be clearing snow off a lot of the walkways now.
I upchucked my breakfast this morning after reading the front page of the CITIZEN.
Does anyone care that a building more than 100 years old - there are very few of those here in PG - will be torn down within three months and turned into a parking lot? Anyone? Hellloooo? Anyone?????
Pharmacies are businesses, I agree that you should shop around, then, the market will control if they can stay in business. If they charge too much, they will eventually go broke.

However, comparing Costco to your neighborhood pharmacy is like comparing Costco to a corner store and saying they charge too much for candy. Costco has more products and more volume and can sell for less. You just have to decide if shopping at the mom and pop stores and paying more is of more value to you than shopping at the big box stores where the profits quickly leave town and country.

As for the set price of drugs, I agree Big Pharma is making way too much, but they are a corporation, they are legally required to make as much money as possible for their share holders. If you don't want to pay for drugs, start looking after yourself better. The VAST majority of chronic illness (the expensive long term drugs) is preventable.

Wow,

If all you find to complain about is the traffic lights, then consider yourself lucky.

And we wonder why some people in this world hate the western way of life?
"Does anyone care that a building more than 100 years old - there are very few of those here in PG - will be torn down within three months and turned into a parking lot? Anyone? Hellloooo? Anyone?????"

I'm fine with it, thanks for asking.
I think these pharmacies count on the fact that there are many who have insurance covering the costs of their drugs, so there are many people who just dont' care about the price and look for convenience. It never occurred to me that there could be such a difference in pricing, since I am one of those who has extended coverage and it just hasn't really been an issue. For those who are seniors who dont' have coverage, others who require medications for diseases they have to manage, I think it is apalling how they are being gouged. I will definitley be passing this information along to my senior aged parents.
The patent for Nexium, the second highest money making drug in the world(the heartburn pill) is running out this year and that should have opened it up to other companies that could make an infinitely cheaper version. But the bandits paid an undisclosed sum to a rival company in order to push the date back 3 years and tie up other competitors in court for the same amount of time. This is criminal. In Canada this drug will cost you at least $70.00 a month when a generic version could cost you $5.00. As they were making billions on this drug, yes billions, they couldn't let this one get away. I would love to see a class action suit of Nexium users against these giants. But then they'd probably be squashed like a bug. If you think governments and other corporations are corrupt; they don't hold a candle to big pharmacy companies. We are all at the mercy of these companies, boomers and otherwise. We should all raise our awareness and get the ball rolling to rein these parasites in.
Six months ago premarin was 21 dollars for a 6 month supply - last week it was 103 dollars for a six month supply?????
Sheet of plywood costs $30.

Cost of active ingredient? $0

Percent markup? Infinite.
What a Statement to make " If you don't want to pay for Drugs look better after yourself" that is a real Winner.
Westcana Electric is responsible for traffic lights on our highways. Call them directly with your issues 250-564-5800.

There's no difference in the appalling markup on the price of prescription drugs as there is on the price of almost everything we as consumers purchase from our local retailers that are "Made in China".

Things now made in China that once were produced here for ten bucks and were sold here for twenty bucks are now produced in China for one dollar and are sold here for twenty five.
All Hail 2010, where the poor get richer and the rich get poorer! I WISH! All should check your on-line bank accounts for the new year increases. You know the billings that we just let them automatically take out.
Travism surely you know that there are genetic diseases and conditions that cannot be prevented or cured by a so called healthy lifestyle. As for Costco pharmacy, I was told by the Costco membership salesperson that their prescription drugs are much cheaper than other pharmacies, so I bought a membership, and had my prescriptions filled there. At that time, I was paying the full cost then claiming for a partial reimbursement from my health plan. The cost for my two drugs at Costco was actually higher than what I usually pay at Hart Drugs, so what gives?
Are there mulitiple pricing levels?
metalman.
I haven't found the pricing of drugs at Costco any lower than drug stores either. I don't know where this info comes from but it sounds like one of those emails that tell us Bill Gates is going to give us $100,000.00 for forwarding an email. Some people will believe anything they read.
Ok so all I have is a over the antenna for my tv viewing and the only thing on channel 12 is "This episode may contain graphic forensic content,Viewer discretion is advised"

Anyone else having this problem or is it just my tv????
Outwest, sorry for the sentence structure error. I guess you have never had one, I am truly humbled by your typing skills.

Metalman,

Which diseases are you talking about? If you mean cancer, diabetes and heart disease, than please explain to me how we have had such a large increase in these three diseases in the last 30-50 years? It is not possible for the entire western world to have had a genetic change in one generation. And don't cop out and say we are living longer, because the diseases are showing up well before the end of previous average life expectancies.

The only thing that has changed in the last 50 years is lifestyle. If you change it back, you have significant decreases in these diseases. Read the research, stop believing what the media wants you to believe. By the way the Canada food guide isn't based on health it is based on food supply which is completely different.
giterdun

And the Citizen calls that NEWS???

Did you notice one day this week the front page picture was a row of garbage cans?
Hmmm...

saywhat: we have peasant vision as well and yes, global has been pooched since about 08:00 pm, about when bones was to have started.
We checked the global site and no mention of issues. Not like they care about antenna leeches because we don't pay cable fees that are NOT passed on or shared to local TV stations such as global.

I too, am appalled at the state of the local Real Estate market!

Full body scans at airports are a violation of human rights. We should be outraged that this technology is being installed in Canada. The airports have other means of ensuring the safety of their planes and passengers without herding people through a scanner, dehumanizing them by stripping them down. But, it is okay because we aren't PHYSICALLY strip searching?? OUTRAGEOUS!
This is a NUDE scan - biometric scan.

These scans are BS!!
http://www.prisonplanet.com/alex-jones-calls-for-mass-resistance-to-implementation-of-body-scanners.html

These scans are no different from the dehumanization that occured in Nazi Germany and that occurs in police states. We allow this, what other loss of privacy and dignity are you willing to give up?
INSANITY!!

Commoner, there is a way to get around this. Don't fly.
"These scans are no different from the dehumanization that occured in Nazi Germany"

I think there are several thousand holocaust survivors who would disagree with you.

If the underwear bomber has been successful and killed hundreds of people, we would be complaining that the authorities 'aren't doing enough'.

"The only thing that has changed in the last 50 years is lifestyle. "

Life expectancy!? A clear factor. Sure they didnt have cancer 1000 years ago but they also died at 20. Check the life expectancy today vs 50 years ago. Your argument is weak at best.

Lifestyle, life expectancy, air and water quality. Does working out and eating organic vegatables protect you from contaminants in the air and water. Sheesh.

Yea lets put big pharms out of business, because clearly life saving drugs will be invented by someone mixing chemicals in their basement trying to make crack. There are huge costs associated with developing drugs. How dare you spend billions to develop a product and then try to make money. Another sheesh.
PLUS big pharms are (mostly) publicly traded. If they print money just buy some stock because, if your twisted view of the world is correct, they must be paying dividends of like 1000%.
There are many more people killed every year the world over by intoxicated drivers than by airplane bombings.

We are doing much better by ourselves than the terrorists ever can hope to do.

Time to take some rights away from all the drivers in the world to get at the drunk drivers that kill and maim tens of thousands.

And, if anyone thinks their rights are taken away, just remember, driving is a choice. :-)
I went through the list of drugs identified by Loki.

Arthritis - Celebrex
lifestyle related due to the kind of work or play, or genetic diposition?

Allergies - Claritin
lifestyle related? or genetic?

Infections (respiratory, etc) - Keflex + Zithromax.
lifestyle related? - living in urban environments and sealed buidings?

Digestive system ulcers - Prevacid + Prilosec
Lifestyle related = stress?

Depression, Anxiety disorders. - Paxil + Zoloft + Prozac+ Xanax
Lifestyle related? - urban living at close quarters, work stress, survival stress, trauma

Cholesterol - Lipitor + Zocor
Lifestyle related? Foods, method of preparation, excessive, may be caused by stress, insufficient time to prepare home food, loss of ability to cook properly.

High blood pressure and congestive heart disease - Vasotec, Tenormin, Norvasc, Zestril
Lifestyle related? - Urban living, urban foods, work stress, family stress, etc.

Those drugs are not used to fight cancer or type 2 diabetes.

There are many cancers that are genetically based, if not most. In fact there are researchers working on the theory that people get cancer because they are unable to remove cancerous growth cells from their body due to an enzyme deficiency much like having an immune deficiency disorder.

The movement of people from an agricultural society to an urban industrial society does not come without its problems. It is useless to blame people for it. It is something that has happened to humans and it will take many generations to become comfotable with increased leisure time, less active work, but increasingly stressful work and increasing removal of the family cohesion.
gus, is your example real or are you just exaggerating to make a point? Which rights have been taken from drivers? You got one thing right though, driving is a choice.

Most choose to drive even though they could be fined for not wearing a seatbelt or yakking on their cell phone. But wait! People choose to wear seatbelts and turn their phones off too!
Travism; Thank you for caring. Please tell me what it is that the media wants me to believe. For the record, I will agree that heart disease and diabetes CAN be preventable, we know that now, but cancer? How would you lecture a person who was exposed to and breathed asbestos dust at work as late as the early 1980's and who has mesothelioma or asbestosis now? Would you say they should have known better? Same question for cigarette smoking, until the late 1960's, as far as I remember, it was not widely known that there was a very real risk of lung cancer to smokers and those around them. Those examples are two that are theoretically preventable now, but I will go with Born's opinion that we have more disease now because most of us live longer, and oh yeah, there are a lot more of us on the planet now than ever before, and the law of averages is bound to have an impact. Of course disease rates are higher.
As for NON preventable diseases, how about celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, Lou Gehrig's disease, should I go on? These are a few examples of diseases that you are born with, some do not manifest right away, none of them are curable, none of them could have been prevented, yet.
And anyway just who do we believe when it comes to what we should or should not eat?
to maintain a healthy body and mind?
Canada's food guide? I think not! That is from the government, and I never trust them. There is so much advice available on how to eat, how to exercise, how to live, heres mine: "Everything in moderation"
Thank you, have a nice week end.
metalman.
BC... it does. Smokers who exercise daily have significantly less cancer than those who do. Rats who feed vegetables had less cancer than those who were not when exposed to the same level of toxin.

Average age of death 1961: 68.35, 2005: 74.2 (from statistics canada). Chronic illnesses for the most part are diagnosed long before 68 years of age. My argument is strong.

I don't understand your publicly traded statement, pharm companies typically do very well for their investors. I am not sure where you are going with that one.

And yes if they spend billions making a drug I understand them making a profit back for it. I was sort of defending the costs of drugs and merely suggested that if you don't want to pay for your drugs, work on not needing them. And I don't see what the problem would be if they went broke due to a lack of sales, wouldn't that mean everyone was healthy? Isn't that the point of the whole thing? Do we get sick to justify an industry or is the industry there because we get sick?
Metal,

Just in case you check again today. The diseases you listed are not the majority of drug costs and not what your average person is going to be buying drugs for. The asbestos is unfortunate but again not the majority, if you want my opinion on that one, WCB should be paying that bill, it was a workplace injury. The cigarette smoking, those who quit when the risk became widely know, if they develop lung cancer, your right they should be given a break, the rest, well it was choice to keep smoking.

Most cancer is preventable. But, we are dividing hairs here. Most drugs can be avoided if you look after yourself, that was my statement and I will stand by it.
"If the underwear bomber has been successful and killed hundreds of people, we would be complaining that the authorities 'aren't doing enough' "

The authorities aren't using the tools they have. So you are correct. They are not doing enough. The FBI has changed its story 6 times already.

If the security measures weren't used the guy would have been successful. So why should anyone be subjected to these scans when using the existing measures are effective?

This is a gross violation of our rights. First airports, then?...and they can scan WITHOUT cause. The PRETENSE is security.
"gus, is your example real or are you just exaggerating to make a point?"

What example? Drunk drivers killing people through their actions the world over? It is VERY real. I am wondering why you would think it is not.

Here is the USA statistic alone. 17,000 per year!!! Almost 6 times a 9/11.

http://www.car-accidents.com/drunk-driving-accidents.html

I am saying with that number being killed every year, that some rights should be taken away from drivers just as there are from flyers. In fact, many more rights since drunk driving is a much more serious problem than terrorists based on the success of drunk drivers with the terrorism they cause on the road. They could hit me and you at any time while we are innocent drivers on the roads.

I would gladly be pulled over 30 times a year to have my breath tested without my consent at random on a fishing exhibition.
"I think there are several thousand holocaust survivors who would disagree with you."

It is how it begins. Colouring of the law. Using pretenses such as security, eventually leads to police states and mass tyranny. Slowly and gradually we the people could find ourselves subjected to similar treatment of those holocaust survivors because of apathy. I refuse to be led down that same road. We have a Charter of Rights and Freedoms in this country entrenched in the constitution for this very reason. We are at the point where SUSPICION by any one individual or group, is enough to violate our personal dignity and freedom. You don't even have to break the law to be treated like a criminal in this country.
For those cancers that might be preventable, how is it that we can prevent them?

Lifestyle that exists through personal choice? or lifeforces that are beyond individula control and maybe better called economicstyle or commercestyle.

http://www.mapcruzin.com/news/rtk031204a.htm

"While the medical profession and cancer research institutions attribute most of the cancer increase to genetic and lifestyle factors, the authors of a new CCPA study assert that carcinogens in our air, water, food, and workplaces are significant causes of cancer.

Economist Robert Chernomas and researcher Lissa Donner draw from reputable studies and findings to conclude that many cancers could be prevented if the cancer-causing chemicals were removed from our environment."
giterdun...

A vote is a vote. Some politicians need every vote they can get. No sense offending anyone. :)
Three major fires in the past few years. Yellowhead Inn. The plywood plant and just recently the hangar at the airport. I can't imagine where the next fire is gonna be. Can you?
Travism if I get your point, you mean we should live a healthier lifestyle, in general. I agree with that 100%.
On a different but related note, Australia has some potent anti impaired driving commercials, go to www.youtube.com/watch?V=Zmf8D+WWd8&feature=playerprofilepage
They started this series of messages twenty years ago, and the above link takes you a montage of past messages. Very graphic, not for the faint of heart.
have a great week end everybody.
metalman.
Driving through the North Kelly school zone this afternoon heading south I was driving the 30k, here comes our finest (RCMP) towards me doing 50-60k, I shrug my shoulders, I come back driving north 30k in the school zone here comes our finest (RCMP) coming back doing 50-60k. Makes me wonder?
I agree with commoner! We are turning in to a policed state, law for everything, papers please.
Gus. You should be a little more specific when making statements about traffic fatalities caused by drunk or impaired drivers. Your statement doesnt hold water. Here are the facts:

The US Natonal Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 17,941 people died in 2006 in *alcohol-related * collisions, representing 40% of total traffic deaths. NHTSA defines fatal collisions as "alcohol related" if they believe the driver, a passenger, or an occupant of the vehicle (such as a pedestrian or pedal cyclist) had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.01 or greter. NHTSA defines nonfatal collisions as "alcohol-related" if the accident report indicates evidence of alcohol present. NHTSA specifically notes that "alcohol-related" does not necessarily mean a driver or non occupant was tested for alcohol and that the term does not indicate a collision or fatality was caused by the presence of alcohol. On average about 60% of the BAC values are missing or unknown. To analyze what they believe is the complete data, statisticians simulate BAC information. Drivers with a BAC of 0.10 are 6 to 12 times more likely to get into a fatal crash or injury than drivers wih no alcohol.

So we have a number of considerations here.

(1) 60% or more of the traffic deaths in the USA are caused by people who are not impaired or havent been drinking. What is your solution to stop these people from creating this carnage on the highways??

(2) The figures state that people with a BAC of 0.10 are 6 to 12 times more likely to get into a fatal accident, and even then they say more likely, rather than being definitive. In Canada 0.08 is considered to be impaired, however the fact that ones BAC is over 0.08 does not necessarily mean than they are in fact impaired, and if they were subjected to clinical tests a large majority of them would in fact pass with no problem. The 0.08 number is arbitrary and is used so that the police can charge you with being over 0.08 without having to prove you are in fact impaired.

(3) So we can see from the statistics etc;, that so called impaired drivers are not necessarily responsible for all the traffic fatalities where alcohol was involved. In other words if a driver had a BAC of 0.04 and was involved in an accident where there was a fatality it would show in the statistics as alcohol related, but not necessarily the cause.

(4) Much like people suggesting that the people who congregate in the downtown area are responsible for all the drug problems in this Country, when we know full well that the majority of drugs are bought, paid for, and consumed by the middle class, or upper middle class.

Have a nice day.
Harbinger

you forgot a couple of fires, The Columbus and the train wreck fire. Those were pretty significant as well.
He also forgot the B&B Music Store, and the Martin Caine Building, on Quebec St.,
On the news flash from Costco on drug costs, this is in the U.S. in Canada we use a lot of Generic drugs. We should be concerned about the drugs the tax payers are paying for and go from the Drug store to the streets.
A half a dozen or so more fires downtown and it will be cleaned up.
I would like to comment on another subject, and that is the City Officials telling us that they have used all of the snow Budget for this Winter. Earlier this week my Husband was watching a front end Loader clearing an area around the Fire Hydrant. He said he could not understand why because he could see the Graders clearing the streets on the next block and would be by shortly. The loader had not been gone more than 15 minutes when the ploughs came by and ploughed a windrow of hard packed snow in front of the Hydrant. The loader travelling with the Grader had to clear the Hydrant out all over again. Is it any wonder they have used all the budget?.
Whatever you do, do not write a letter to the editor and make observations about how they "put on the hours" dropping sand at intersections around midnight the day before it snows. They will find out where you live and then you will be lucky if they come by a week or two later to do yer street. Sure been a lesson to us.
"...law for everything, papers please."

There is NO LAW that says I MUST subject to AUTOMATIC scanning at the airport.

This is really what is seen on those scanners - not the sanitized version albeit still graphic, in mainstream media. Warning NUDITY.
