Police Need More Than Pens And Pencils
By Ben Meisner
While the finger pointing continues on the weekend as Wiebo Ludwig being the prime suspect in the Dawson Creek pipe line bombings, the manner in which the investigation has been unfolding leaves much to be desired.
Ludwig was asked to come to Grande Prairie to offer his assistance in the investigation only to be told he was going to be charged with extortion. According to his son, when Ludwig exited his vehicle he was told he was under arrest. That will not sit well with a Judge or Jury and while it is important to say any involvement of Ludwig is just an allegation; asking the guy to come to Grande Prairie because they wanted to talk to him about industry pollution and then arresting him will not go well.
Keep in mind that a young woman was killed on Ludwig’s farm and to this day no one has been charged in connection with that death. Ludwig also has served 18 months for previous disruptions of the gas industry in his area.
According to his lawyer Paul Moreau, the warrant to search his home and out buildings seeks, amongst other items, red and blue pens, writing paper, recording equipment and explosives . Those items by themselves are not likely to get the juices flowing in a jury or trial before a judge.
Let’s not for a moment suggest that Wiebo Ludwig is a saint who would not take it upon himself to try and stop gas and oil development in his area. The record speaks for itself.
The police on the other hand have had 200 members working on the case, add to that a 1 million dollar reward , and a few pens and pencils in all likelihood are not going to get a conviction regardless of who is charged in the matter.
I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.
