Prince George, B.C.- Recruitment efforts at Northern Health for the University Hospital of Northern B.C. have been very successful over the past year.
In 2009, the hospital ( formerly PGRH) has recruited 12 specialists;
-
5 anesthetists, which brings that department to a full compliment
-
4 internal medicine specialists
-
1 pathololgist
-
1 obstetrician gynecologist
-
1 radiologist who will be starting this year.
General Practitioners recruited, numbered 6, that is specifically for doctors who will have staff privileges at the hospital, that is not necessarily reflective of the number of G.P.’s in Prince George overall. A general practitioner can set up an office in Prince George without being recruited by Northern Health, although they would still have to be credentialed for the hospital if they planned on treating any of their patients there.
Recruitment is on going, with the latest need for the hospital being:
-
13 General Practitioners,
-
4 Emergency Room Doctors
-
1 Orthopaedic surgeon
-
2 Ear , Nose and Throat specialists
-
2 radiologists
-
4 internal medicine specialists
-
1 plastic surgeon
-
6 psychiatry specialists, who would also operate in Northern Outreach programs to other communities within Northern Health
-
1 pediatrician
Northern Health spokesperson Erin Collins says Northern Health is not just recruiting for physicians with medical specialties, “ We are also looking for those who have a additional skills such as teaching medical students for the Northern Medical Program.”
There is also a recruitment program underway for nurses. Collins says Northern Health is recruiting for ten such positions. “In 2009 we filled 60 vacant external positions, we are also actively recruiting nurses for casual and relief positions. We don’t have a large local relief pool and that can present staffing challenges. We are always recruiting for specialty trained and seasoned nurses for departments such as the operating room and emergency room. We conduct in house training for specialty areas and we have several of those specialty training programs running, and we have more set to start next month."
