Prince George, B.C.-  The Steelworkers  Union will have exploratory talks with Canfor today in an effort to hammer out a new contract for their membership.
The Steelworkers represent about 9,000 forestry workers in the province, who have been without a contract since the last one expired at the end of June.
Today’s session with Canfor is the second round of exploratory discussions with this company, and a similar session is set to take place with West Fraser on the 25th.
Initially, the contract discussions had been with Conifer but those talks broke down in mid October.
Any contract reached with one company will be the template for others.

Good luck to the steel workers as the advantage is in Canfors favor. They will be facing wage cuts and benefits losses on this round.
All part of the overall union busting plan!
Lets face reality here. Canfor has lost millions in the last year. If it was your company would you be giving and giving more to the already over paid workers who belong to a union. Some of these guys are lazy and stand behind the union to keep their jobs. I say it is about time the union gives back because their greed has gone on long enough. I do not blame Canfor in the least!
Unions were all about getting their share when the pie was growing. Now that the pie is shrinking they dont think they should bleed too?
It is true that there are lazy union workers, not all but enough. I worked in a sawmill for 3 summers years ago. There was always a group of workers at each place who worked hard to find a place to hide and not work while the hard working stiff worked. Amazingly the lazy ones would always show up at the perfect time and stand next to the working stiff and make it look like they were involved. They would hide on roofs, storage areas and even attic spaces. If they are caught they get a warning but unless someone actually goes and gets a staff member, they hide and don’t work. Staff needs three warnings before they can do anything with these people. It is ridiculous and shameful. I lost all respect for the union and what it stands for because they would fight for these useless people to keep their jobs.
I worked in heavey industry for over 30 years and a union member all my working years . Strange but I never ever saw any lazy workers I didnt have the time to watch the next guy to see if he was hiding or being a slacker.

Paying good wages is good business. Its those high paid union workers that have kept Prince George afloat. Some cant see the forest for the trees. The unions are also used by the employer to control the wage overhead and human resourses.

Oh and poor Canfor those employees are taking them for a ride. Wonder what Canfor did with the $460,000,000.00 profit that they made a couple years back?

Stop watching the next guy. Get to work find a union to increase your wages and be part of our economy.

Hows my spelling so far?
Cheers
IMO has a point about the union workers where he/she worked. I too have worked in forestry at a mill and there is quite a lot of hiding going on. The old saying "Nobody moves nobody gets hurt" comes to mind.
Wage rates set the type and the quality of a companies work force.

I find the concept that lowering wages will increase quality and productivity very interesting. Will lower wages will bring in a better quality of employee?

A union can not protect an unproductive employee. The Company must only follow the same due dilegence in human resources that it does in other areas. Document, document, document. Then work with the employee to try to resove problems. If the employment relationship is broken then act.
To often the employer acts to quickly and has to start over.

My job is dependant on my company making a profit. I and my fellow workers do not put up with unproductive workers. I do not like working hard while someone else sits down.

Lower the wages at Plateau and you will see the top employees leaving for other higher paying companies. Leaving the employer with what kind of a work force?

Current mining activity is a major factor keeping forestry employers reasonable. I know Canfor is looking over it shoulder at Mount Milligan and TTM Reources.

I hope The Steelworkers brought some lube with them. It will be hard to dodge any type of clawback this time.

Even if the wages do not take a hit, I would imagine Canfor would be going after a large chunk of the costly benefits that the unions have extorted from the companies over the years when they had all the negotiating power.

Talk about taking a knife to a gun fight.
The unions are done in BC- time for the unions to step aside- see'ya
Union member wages set the trend for all persons employed by a company. For all those non-union people beating up on the unions be prepared to take a wage cut because most certainly if the unions take a wage cut it will also affect the non-union workers as well.
Spend a little time investigating the history of unions and how the working man was treated before the right to have a union came into place. We might still be in the dark ages without them.
Retired,

you are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Because of your "union" bias you turn a blind eye and do anything you can to protect your fellow union member. Never saw a slacker in 30 years? B.S, either that or you were the leader of the slackers and never saw a guy work less than you.

Maybe if a few of you opened your eyes and looked at what is really going on, you would understand a bit more rather than just blindly going about collecting your wages.
I have worked around some large union companies for a number of years and you can rest assured there is no shortage of slackers. For some it was a way of life.
They were always coming from or going to a location, but seldom ever working. The mantra seemed to be to stay out of sight when slacking, and everthing would be **ok**

Insofar as Unions setting the wage scale. This was certainly so a number of years ago, however there have been some significant changes. Most of your Grocery stores, a lot of restaurants, and commercial business's are union, and they pay a wage of approx $12.00 or less per hour.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Well Stompin I see you omitted to read Residents post.

Most of your Grocery stores, a lot of restaurants, and commercial business's are union, and they pay a wage of approx $12.00 or less per hour.

I dont know of a single restaurant that is union. Overwaitea was union But Mr Pattison changed that by forming a new company Save-on Foods. There are those who like to suck up to their employer and make him a ton of money hoping that some will rub off for their livelyhood.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it.
Cheers

One of the biggest things about unions that constantly get missed when the bad mouthing starts, is that there are a lot of things workers now have that unions did in fact win for their members.
Be that right or wrong.
Medical,dental,pensions,things like eye glasses,work boots,even gloves,cover-alls, and such.
And not just for union workers either.
There was a time, not so long ago, when we didn't have those kinds of things.
Not even a hard hat!
You were expected to supply your own or you didn't work.
If you needed boots, you paid for them.
Now at least you can get a rebate from many companies.
Gloves,the same.
I was a union worker most of my life when I was not self-employed, but I never felt that I actually needed the union to keep a job.
I was never fired nor was I ever accused of not doing my job.
The ball is now in the companies court and it may be nice to at least have a union to protect what you DO have.
Who else will?
Certianly not the employers!
